starter?

I've been working on the bronco some getting it ready to put the new dvd/cd player in etc, and I went out to start it today and it will not start. When I turn the key i get a humming noise but no start. Is it the starter? That was my presumption, but I wanted to ask before I buy one. I'm fairly sure it is the stock starter, and the lights, ac, etc.. work even though it wont' start. Thanks

it could be the starter but to be sure most auto stores will check them for free, so pull it off and take it in to be tested. It could also be a bad starter relay that is on the wall above the passenger fender. I have one that wont start. But yours sounds more like a starter so pull it and get it checked.

you said you hear a humming, im guessing thats either your fuel pump when you turn the key to on or your starter spinning away with the gear missing or staying retracted due to a bad bendix spring.

The humming actually comes from the starter relay. I do know that. Got my wife to turn the key while I looked in the engine compartment. The relay is on the wall behind the battery... that's where the humming was from...

thats a cheap part and not that am advocating shotgun method you might want to replace that first because it is so cheap and having a good new one never hurt anyone. Then if you are not fixed check the wiring to the starter for disconnections. If you are still in the no start mode then it would be time to pull the starter and have it checked. I am not sure about your starter depends on the year, but I know some have an electrical component that mounts on the outside of it that you can replace but personnally I would replace that relay, even if its not the problem you have not wasted any money those seem to fail at the worse possible times and if it fails sometimes, it will make your car keep starting and that sucks too.

i would also say to change the selonoid first because its cheap and easy, and sounds like it may be the problem, i have heard them click, not hum, but Broncos never stop amazing us

try applying power directley to the starter with jumper cables and a screwdriver, if the starter fires up then look at the wires for disconnections, then if eveything else still looks good then go spend money on parts

i had the same problem, replace the soleniod, and the wires going from the battery to the solenoid then the soleniod to the starter, do the get hot when it buzzs? then its deffenetly the cords to
