I have almost finished my 74 EB (ground up) and ran into a problem with the starter vs the flywheel. I have a C4 auto, pan fill, bolted to my 351W. I purchased a new high tork mini starter from Tom's and when I turn it over the starter just spins (bendix engages). I took some measurements and the depth looks okay (face of starter plate to flywheel about 7/8"). The side measurement (meshing of gears) is off. the starter gear is about 1/4" away from the flywheel so it won't mesh. The flywheel is 164 tooth ~14" diameter. There is about 1" clearance around the flywheel to bell housing. What is the problem??? Help! anyone.

Hi Luther., welcome..!!

The variables are;

1) Manual trans flywheel.

2) C4 (& I think, C6) auto flex plate..28 oz 164T

3) -------------------------------------------..58 oz 164T

4) Automatic starter -or- manual starter.

If it's not the wrong starter or wrong flexplate..., it's "by me"..? :unsure:

UPDATE: seems there's a 50 oz. flwheel/flexplate as well... :unsure:

My bad! When i had the C4 rebuilt I gave the shop specific instructions on the flywheel/tork converter (164 tooth, 1800 stall speed). Well, I did not check it when i dropped it in the vehicle.

For sale: 1 ea. 157 tooth flywheel and tork converter, brand new, installed once.
