I bought a new speedometer cable to put in my bronco and when we were about to take it out we realized that when you twisted the cable the speedometer worked. But when you bolt it in to the tranny it doesnt work. Any one know the procedure for fixing this??

Thanks to Miesk5 for this.

Bronco's prior to 1992 uses a geared speedometer/odometer

Gears for 2WD manual trans Ford vehicles & all 4WD pre-92 trucks

This link teaches one how to calculate which gear should be used to replace their present gear to recalibrate the spedometer due to either gearing or tire size changes.

The first post in the thread shows pictures of the gear that drives the speedometer in pre '92 broncos.

There would be another gear on the inside of the transfer case that drives the pictured gear.

I have the yellow gear but Its fine...no wear what so ever. Is there a replacement peace that goes inside the transfer case or do i have to replace the whole transfer case???

I imagine that the drive gear for that is made of metal, and would be unlikely to fail.

Are you sure that your cable (with the plastic gear) was fully seated into the transfer case?

Both gears are plastic the one on the output shaft has a small steel ball that fits in a pocket on the output shaft the gear then goes on then a steel retainging ring snaps over the gear . Maybe the ball got out somehow and the gear is spinning on the shaft . 1987 and up to 1991 have a cover plate that you can take off you do have to remove the rear yoke then the plate comes off to expose the gear . 1986 and back you have to split the T case . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
