hehe ok here is an Idea. I was in the same boat when I moved to california in 1997 with my Bronco. Long story short the owner before me registered my vehicle as a 1975, why? because he took some parts from one and decided it was one now!) I re-registerd my vehicle as a hand built vehicle and had the DMV issue a engine swap ticket that stated the engine was from a 1973 which it is. this helped me get around some smog laws after I re-registerd my vehicle as a 1973 with the CHP (California Highway Patrol) the vehicle is now ofiicially CA exempt.

You could do the same type of thing but fudge the year slightly...I know its a longshot with a '76 but it worked for me. They were cool i told them the body was a combination of new and old parts from many years and the engine was what I wanted the vehicle re-registerd as. They gave me a NEW vin# and ****! all done.
