I have a 1990 Bronco, the rear window will only go up and down with the switch in the cab. The key switch on the tailgate will not work. How could I troubleshoot the switch ,I didn't see any plugs on the switch to check voltage. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do I would be gratefull.

THANKS

Welcome to Bronco Zone!!! The tailgate key switch has a safety feature which won't allow the window to roll up if the gate is open, and it won't work if the gate isn't completely, firmly closed. If the switch flat doesn't work, you can look at the wiring going into the tailgate on the driver's side-bottom corner. that area often gets pinched, and you may find a broken wire. You can check the voltage there, and also by removing the inner access panel to check voltage at the motor. Good luck, JSM84

ever hooked up a 2 way toggle to make a rear window go up and down, i may need to do that, i guess my tailgate was replaced before i got my truck and there nothing but 2 wires coming out of the tailgate, so if u touch them to a battery and reverse that too as u tough the batt, u can make it go up and down, id rather have a button tho

I believe the safety switch has been previously removed form my 1990 Bronco. Can't find it inside the tailgate. There does appear to be a small bracket in the middle of the tailgate with a 1/2" hole in it where the switch may have been located. That location seems to be where a push rod may have engaged the switch. Thoughts?

I know the motor is still good. Tested the red/yellow wires at a connector with a battery jump.

I am not sure why the switch in the cab works but the key switch on the tailgate doesn't. The saftey switch you mention appears to be in line with the power from both switches. , if it failed it looks like neither switch would work. I have removed the cover on the tailgate and activated the key switch by hand but no luck.

Did you check the fuse for the tail gate key switch? There are two fuses one for the driver switch and one of the tail gate key switch. look at the diagram in the second post that 1990Bronco351 included in his reply.

Good luck,

:)>-

Checked the fuse under the dash. It looks ok. Where's the one in the tailgate located? Near the tail gate key switch?

Thanks, Dan

Good luck,

I checked the fuses before I posted , I didn't find any issues . After reviewing the diagram it appears if a fuse was blown the power door locks wouln't work.

I will check the fuses again. It has to be something simple I just cant find it .
