I been checking the local shops around my hometown for a new motor. All of the shops tell me that they only want to use jasper motors. So then I ask them about the price and all of them tell about 3900 for a brand new motor with a 3 year 100000 mile warranty. So I was wondering if this price was to much? Also wanted to know if any has a jasper motor and how is it?

Right before i bought my bronco which has a jasper motor in it, and was only a year old. The one head took a shit, shop and jasper claimed it was from overheating due to the tabs they put on the bottom of the heads so they can tell if did overheat. How ever the previous owner who was my uncle said that it never overheated and never lost any coolant. So since it was "overheated" it was not covered under the warranty. However Jasper was kind enough to supply all the parts required to repair the motor at no cost, just had to pay for the labor. It is my belief that either A: Jasper is a good and generous Company or B: there was something else messed up with the head maybe a port clogged or something who knows as i am not a engine expert and that was the Shops and Jaspers way of covering there own asses. Me personally would consider taking it to a local shop to have it rebuilt. I don't know Jaspers methods of rebuilds. but from local shops from where i live seem to take better care when rebuilding.

$4K seems a bit pricey to me for an engine, especially from a company that's squirrely about standing behind their product. A quick look around the web shows basic rebuilds going for roughly HALF that ammount.

Now if you're looking for a performance rebuild or something other than a stock engine that's a whole different story but you can get a used engine from almost any junkyard for $500-$750 and you can get a rebuilt from anywhere from $1200-$2000 depending on core charges and parts replaced. If you're willing to do more of the work yourself you can just pick up a long block for less than $1K

Granted these links are just the first & easiest ones that I found but they illustrate that if you shop around there are some excellent deals to be had from guys who build a lot of decent engines. Jasper is a nice name but I sure wouldn't spend TWICE as much as I needed to just to tell folks I had one in my truck. For that matter you can probably find a local shop that will rebuild what you have for a lot less then what Jasper wants.

Just my $.02 & my opinion isn't worth anything more than what you paid for it.

I picked up a complete engine from the salvage yard for $102 and that was water pump to flywheel, intake to oil pan. I had to pull it myself but that's cool with me. It's in the shop now getting bored .030 and the heads are getting "minor" port work. That's around $300 (doing the heads myself, have two sets so if it doesn't go as planned i'll have the other two machined) and I just spent $570 on KB flat top +.030 forged pistons and .596 forged rods. So that's a thousand or so and another $50 for the gasket set and $150 for the new cam kit from edlebrock. So that's around $1200 or so for a "performance" motor. I already have the edlebrock performer intake and BBK twin 56mm throttle body and adj. fuel pressure regulator but that's like another thousand and I'll have more power and I know it'll be done right. It did take me building one motor to realize I HAVE to pay more attention or I'll smoke this one. I found out that if the bearing "tangs" are not on the same side, you'll smoke them relitivly quick. I don't know if this helped but for $4000 you could build your own motor BAD ASS! If you were in the area I have all the tools to do it all too and would help you out. Hope I didn't just ramble.

I recently purchased a short block from Fliteline Engine Supply. A '94-'97 roller block $800 with freight no core. I believe the long block was about $400 more. Good people to do business with.
