I just moved up to Monterey and I need to find some new trails. I was in San Diego and ran in the desert most of the time. My friends up here all have new Jeeps so I need some places with options - you know little baby trails for them and big boy ones for me. I've seen some places on the internet, but they all seem to be controlled off road areas. I don't like that. I'm looking for places where you run all day and set up camp on your own at night - no hassles.

Thanks

Are you kidding? You are neer 4x4 heaven. All you have to do is travel accross the valley to the mountains on the east side. It's about 4 hours from Monterey. The Dusy Ershim trail is in the sierra nevadas right up by Shaver lake. (outside of fresno) It just all depends on what you have in your ride. There are so many trails up there, just pull off the side of the road and start traveling. Then you can camp in the middle of the forest. Usually somebody has been there before so there are fire pits all over the place, and wood is not hard to come by. Just make sure you have atleast 5 gallons of water on you to put out your fire, otherwise the fire station people get a little upset. I just moved from the fresno area and there are so many places over there. Also there's the Rubicon trail, and that's about 4 hours from you too north of sacramento. Hope this helps.

I don't know much about CA, but here is a website with a lot of California trail writeups. Maybe there are some near you.

And don't forget if you every just want to check out how your 4x4 is running or if you make any improvements to it, Hollister is right around the corner maybe 25 minutes from you. Most are dirt bike trails, but there's a couple trails you can get up into.
