ok well i have a 1988 bronco with a 300cid straight 6, dana 44 in the front, c6 tranny, and a 9 inch in the rear. i am relatively new to the 4x4 world and am not trying to make some off road beast, just a rig i can take on the streets and have some fun with in the dirt on weekends. so i was just curious. is the 300 i have going to be enough to let me have some fun in the mud and dirt? im not talking anything extreme here seeing as how i am a beginner and live in the city. i thought about just swapping in a carb. 302 motor since they seem to be going for a dime a dozen, but i dont want to go through the hassle of putting a new motor in if the 300 will do me fine.

The 300 I-6 is a good motor. IT should be fine if you have the right gear ratio for your tire size. My 86 will pull a loaded trailer through the mud, so it has plenty of torque. IF you want a real man's power plant, though, drop in a 460 cid!!! JSM84

haha someday i want to drop a 460 into her or another rig, but for now i want something smaller /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> i was just curious if it would be good enough or not. also, should it be harder to find parts for the 300? ive spent a couple days now looking for a cat back exhaust for it since the previous owner just chopped off everything past the catty. would something from a 5.0 or 5.8w work or fit even?

The 5.0l is good for building up to add more power. Mustangs had 302s and there are tons of performance parts made for them.

how easy would it be to build up a 300? i have been doing alot of looking but am having seirously no luck finding anything. i mean i am not trying to make a monster torque machine out of it, but i would like to make a few mods to the engine, and so far i am finding nothing for it.

The inline 6 dosen't have alot of parts for it. I would drive with the 6 for now but get a 302 and build it up in your garage so that you aren't out of a truck.

don't bother with a 302 go bigger and the 300 is awsome for anything you can without a crasy lift and a winch!!!!!!!!!!!

About the only performance mods I know of for the 300cid is a new intake manifold for a 4bbl carb and an exhaust header, both from Clifford's Performance. I never could get their website to work, though. ANd not sure if a V8 exhaust system will work very good due to improper backpressure (too much or too little). There may be a website just for the 300 if you search previous posts on "300I-6". JSM84

parts for the 5.0 are easier to find if you leave the bronco out of it for example you can find 2 cams for the bronco 5.0 and 20 for a mustang 5.0 same damn motor just not associated with a fullsize truck the same way

also the strait six exhaust is very different try doing a search for walker for the pipes or just got to any garage in town and ask them who is good most "do-all"shops will know who is the best and cheapest in the area

the 300 has plenty of power for what you want to do. below is a pic of my 93' f-150 i built a couple of years ago. combined with 4.56 gears and the t-18 4 speed, i couldn't get this truck stuck and it would creep over rocks all day long. even with 38.5 m/t baja claws on there, i still took off in 2nd gear every time. most people look over the 300 because of the popularity and so many aftermarket parts available for 302's, but in my opinion, the 300 felt just as torquey (if not more) as many 302's i've driven. good luck.

wow that is a beautiful truck man! and you say you have a 300 in it? i seriously never would have guessed that. ive also heard that the 300 feels more torquey than the 302 from somebody, but i kind of thought he was just making that up. well thanks alot for the advice y'all!

I used to have a 300 straight six in my old '86 and it could romp witht he best of them. It's got good torque so it is ideal for pulling as well. I don't think you should have aproblem with it. Good Ridin'

it was. those pics are straight out of the body shop where we replaced a bedside, tailgate, 2 front fenders, and hood. many times i forgot that that truck wasn't as little as the jeeps i followed in on some trails i shouldn't have been on. :mellow: i sold it shortly after those pics before i got crazy and took it back on the trails again. rebelyeltex, i'd keep that 300 it's more that sufficient for your needs.
