Yesterday I was driving on the pa tunpike at about 70 mph and my oil pressure guage dropped like a rock. It stays below the "L" until I slow down to almost a stop. Then it come back to center. When I touch the gas...drops again. There is plenty of oil and it seems to run o.k. (didn't overheat in the 40 mile ride home). I read a bunch of articles about the gauge not being a real guage and i understand all that. I'm not a computer guy and this is my first time on any kind of site like this, so you know I'm hurtin' for an answer... Looking for best and worst case senarios. Oh yeah, I'm cheap too. (wife, kids, house, etc.)

1993 XLT 302 stock

This is a second vehicle for my family and I usually drive it 10 miles to work when the weathers bad and I can't bike, so it doesn't get much road time or a chance to heat up. I helped a friend move about 100 miles and this is what i get..

any help would be appreciated. thnx

ok, no taps from lifters or engine knocks? Ck for a leak @ sender too;

if not, ck the OP sender's connector for bad connection, or loose wiring; clean contscts and run to see if this works

here it is thanks to Shawn!

To test (& save $, been there too, and still there!)

then ground the sender wire and see if the gauge flutuates,if it doesn't then replace the sender.

Worse case is worn oil pump; get a cheap OP gauge to hook up to test pressure; or put in a mech oil pressure gauge;

use a two inch ****** w/ 45 degree union; place new sender for gauge sender in this T & then hard line it; use clutch blank next to master cylinder (looking from bumber, blank is oval piece to left of the MC) to route tubing into cab; it is a nice and clear space tere..

Of course I would tell you to try a second guage to see if it is different so you don't damage anything but also know that the stock guage in thse trucks are famous for dropping off suddenly when nothing is wrong and giving you a heart attack. Sometimes they won't ever read as high as it actually is again. Get an aftermarket one is my advice.
