I have the Bronco Bug and want one pretty bad. I don't really know alot about them but I can learn! I just sold my 1966 Scout 800 and got a fair deal for it...

I'm looking at buying a 1992 Bronco 5.8 push button 4x4 bone stock except the alternator (upgraded to 130 amp) beautiful condition BUT has 252K miles on it. I haven't seen it in person but the photos show it looking amazing... We all know how that is though...

SOooo.... The question is how much should I be willing to pay? He's asking $2900. Edmunds review and appraisal says in outstanding condition and fully loaded $2200...

I like to do my research before haggling...

Get back to me soon if ya can I'm headed out to see it tomorrow

Hey Sarge, Welcome,

The price sounds about right if it is in good shape. Is the price a good value, depends on how bad you want a Bronco. The milage is a tad on the high side. The engine may be at the "top of the hill" so to speak, but if it show as a well maintained vehicle then there should be nothing to worry about. I drive The Beast daily and do alot of highway driving. Took it on a 1600 mile round trip this summer, and didn't have a problem. That with 180,000 miles!

Whatever you decide, Good Luck.

Here are some pictures... To help you help me make a decision lol

I just don't really know what is over paying? I can test drive it all day and determine if the transmission is good not really sure about the motor.... What are some costs? 1. Motor? 2. Tranny? Everything else is pretty straight forward go to Auto Zone and buy it slap it on and go...

yo SGT,

WELCOME!

Did the Edmunds price include that 252K miles?

Our Navy FED CU uses NADA; bank uses Kelley Blue Book.

Ck Kelley Blue Book http://www.kbb.com/used-cars/

I did a quick ck there; Excellent Condition; $2,156 w/252,000 miles & XLT package; if buying from a private party.

If buying from a dealer in EXCELLENT COND., it is $3,031

I don't see close-ups of 1/4 panel wheel arch where rust is often found; esp under that moulding.

We have a 96 xl and it is our Daily Driver and is very reliable.

=

Besides the usual visual, driveability and leak checks, look for:

Besides the usual visual, driveability and leak checks, look for:

- oil pan rust - our's formed spots @ 62k miles - sand it down and prime/paint it w/Rust Bullet® Automotive) & high temp. paint - too time-consuming replacement for such a basic thing as not having better gauge and undercoat/paint by Ford

- radiator plastic side seam leaks, esp. during engine cool-down period/overnight - our's leaked @ 50k miles & again just recently - look for leaks after engine has cooled down, esp overnight

- auto tranny - E4OD had a lot of improvements made by 96 so look for good shifts and see the maintenance records; fluids/filter should have been changed every 30k miles and less if used for towing

- rust in inner rear fender lips, bottom of B pillars and bottom of tailgate (fender lips are rusting due to Ford's flawed spot weld process on the inner (tub) and 1/4 panel that lets moisture & debris in the seam) - A Bronco may need extensive & $$$ patch or full panel replacements...

check tg drains for clogs/rust..check weather seals, esp the outer ws on glass

- radius arm bushing deterioration (I coated em w/pure silicone, from day 1) but replaced at 80k miles w/Daystar polyurethane bushings

- ball joints.. costly if not DIY

- Programmable Speedometer Odometer Module (PSOM in 92-96), make sure it works; look for a waver in the needle at highway speeds; most get yard units for DIY

- look for some maint records or contact a dealer to see what maint was done to it a Ford dealership in the past (need VIN)

or on-line dealer service record summaries (Ford is adding entries now), etc. at Ford myford.fordvehicles.com (need VIN) & must register if you haven't already for your other Fords.

If no maint records are avail; check and replace if needed all filters and fluids.

Esp if it is an Auto tranny; fluid level; when at norm op temp; after running thru all gears & reverse; no burnt toast or whitish (water) deposits on dip stick.

Car Fax is ok, but they did NOT list over $5k in single accident damages on 3 of our past vehicles; & our ex-92 Van had less mileage listed than when we sold it according to a CarFax report 2 years later... they did nothing after we contacted them.

- cracked exhaust manifold/Y, etc.

- roof/gutter area cracks (mostly appl. to earlier years)

- emissions air check valve & cat. converter (AIR) tubes tend to rust early; as does the AIR tube; buy locally or from pciinc.com

- radiator core supports, lower, it rusts mainly on passenger side, PIA to replace

- body mounts and fram rust

For a 96 get it checked for codes free at Parts Stores if you don't diy; For pre 96 with EFI do a SELF TEST - my pal BroncoJoe at http://broncozone.com/topic/22350-oil-pressure-problems/

Look Codes up in my broncolinks.com site using the new Search function.

- transfer case operation - electric push button motor/connector is a prob. area; usually usually a broken travel stop or the motor connector is fouled, etc.

Also the Check Engine Light (CEL) comes on when the electronic engine control system is not working properly. The check engine warning indicator comes on briefly when the ignition switch lock cylinder is turned to ON, and should turn off when the engine starts. If the check engine warning indicator does not come on when the ignition switch lock cylinder is turned to ON or if it comes on while the vehicle is moving, the system is malfunctioning

If the CEL does not light up at all when starting it; then suspect that someone removed it.

Same for Amber ABS lamp in Instr Panel.. The 4-wheel anti-lock brake system is self monitoring. When the ignition switch is placed in the RUN position, the anti-lock brake electronic control module will perform a preliminary self check on the anti-lock electrical system indicated by a momentary illumination of the amber ABS warning light in the instrument cluster. During vehicle operation, including normal and anti-lock braking, the anti-lock brake electronic control module monitors all electrical anti-lock functions and some hydraulic operations.

In most malfunctions of the anti-lock brake system, the amber ABS warning light will be illuminated. However, most malfunctions are recorded as a coded number in the anti-lock brake electronic control module memory and assist in pinpointing the component needing service. Our module blew the micropprcessors two years ago and two yard modules were bad. No returns so I'm running without 4WABS, just like the old days.

Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19 (http://broncozone.com/topic/14269-code-reader/page__pid__74587__mode__threaded)

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears incl Reverse. Then turn off all accessories/lights, etc.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Do Key On Engine Off (KOEO) portion first.

Look Codes up in my broncolinks.com site using the new Search function.

And Post em here according to:

KOEO

&

KOER

GL!

Hey thanks alot! I'm goin to print this out and take it with me. I'm really setting my limit on this at $2500... I like Edmunds better than using KBB. My pop looked it up KBB and came up with $2680 excellent condition and $1930 fair. Pictures can be misleading though... Learned that one when I drove 2 1/2 hours to look at what I thought was an impecable Bronco. Turned out to be a drivable mess... Woulda made a BADASS mudder though

Hey Sarge,

After you digest all the info. Here's my take.... If the pics are true, and the engine and tranny age good, I would make $2500.00 the top price.

Just remember there are many sources for parts. Try to find parts Made in the good old USA.

Good Luck

Well..... It wasn't a complete POS... Took a mechanic, and there was probly $2200 in repairs needed... Oil all over the lower extremities, antifreeze ontop the block. Needs tires like tomorrow, drivers front suspension was shot, drivers front ball joints shot, transmission needs rebuild major clunk while gears shifted at low speed, drove down the freeway: speedo read 80 while my gps and traffic said 60 turned on OD then off and scared the shhhhhtuff out of us... Tcase was leaking like a siv....... But motor was decent (lil tired) interior was impeccable. paint and body no rust but in the rear of the rain gutters (2in). Guy wouldn't budge on price... Great trip though (174 miles/ 348 roundtrip). 67* down there 102* up here... Guy was pretty cool, anywho the search continues....

I drove all of California this weekend. Well 948 miles worth since Thursday... I looked at these Sunday:

http://merced.craigslist.org/cto/3259899139.html -pretty cool rig/ stock lift, 33" tires... Owes 3 years back tags ($420) and needed all 4 tires like same day (were flat before trying to sell and then over aired them... tranny was good motor was tired peddle to the floor wouldn't do more than put put around the neighborhood, cracked windshield= um... no especially when she wouldn't budge on $4900

http://stockton.craigslist.org/cto/3247940745.html -straight bucket... Guy met me in a KMART parking lot... OK... so much for cold start and checking for oil/**** stains. Interior was shot, back window held up by wooden wedges. Had no paperwork, stated purchased vehicle 2 weeks prior from some guy... Needed a new steering column and ignition neck...hmmmmmmmmm NO

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/3275582832.html - loved this one! Until I drove it...same story... tranny on its last leg front axle driver side thunking from take off. Balls joint clunk when turning to driver side. No rust great body. No real leaks just a little outta tcase. shifted little rough while drive city streets. Went to get on freeway throttle through the on ramp hit"passing gear" loud whining noise and got stuck wouldn't shift down and Bronco was not excellerating... Wanted to haggle alittle to getem to lower price... Had to call momma since it was hers anyway... sigh, new husband driving ex husbands old Bronco last 15 years had no idea what has been done to it? COME ON! I saw new belts, new starter (remanufacture sticker with current date), new exhaust (old cut out new welded in), new white drivers door painted blue to match vehicle. over spray on bottom, mostly still white under there and inside frame tape marks. Swore it was never replaced. Liar.... I'm a junkyard ***** when it comes to parts... It had the paint marker writing clear as day. To top it off after driving it... Pulled slowly through parking lot, stopped, RPMs dropped lowwwwwwwwwwww killing motor and wouldn't restart hmph.... besides mechanical : drivers seat would not lock in upright back position/ some makeshift bolt and cable system was rigged but broke... Passenger door will not open from inside... Entire hood is oxidized... Aftermarket scoop on roof lil rubber gaskets crumbled when I swept my hand across them... I offered him Edmunds review Average price $2200 to start negotiating... Wouldn't drop below $3000

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/3272865528.html -found this on my road trip, this was badass! drove so smooth had power for days, anything that had gone wrong guy had already taking care of! One of the only "just had a baby" sales that was honestly because of that. plus broken/shatter tibia? could use new tires, just cosmetics crap wrong with it... Would have bought it but only had $3k on me... Offered that, he told me find $500 more bucks... Damn military, don't pay me til the first of every month...

I THINK I'M ASKING TO MUCH OF THESE RIGS!!! I don't want to put much effort into these right away! Gut feeling though... Everyone of them has it's quirks and everyone of them appealed in one way or another. But I can wait for just the right one since I'm on medical leave until November 11. Tore my left ACL and blew out my cartlidge and menicious on the right...

Thanks for all the responses! Kinda flying by the seat of pants here not knowing much about these tanks! Love picking all yer brains!!!

I need to change the title to "******* still looking for a Bronco" lol I hope this one doesn't sell before I get up there. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/3283213590.html I'm goin to take a train up there and check it out. Cheaper than gas and puting more miles on the Equinox. Heck I don't care as long as it runs....

I'm already doin a preown build in my head! I love the fact its an xl/custom. No power anything! No worries about windows rolling up or down. Vinyl floors so no worries about carpet. I'll Raptor line it anyway! Grey leather? **** yes! No stained ass seats! White paintover red... hmmmmm.... Ok! I've rattle canned all my previous rides

anyways! I'm down for a running motor/tranny, 4 wheels and a stereo... Don't know what I was thinking looking for that diamond in the rough. I'll make anything I get shine!!! Sorry self motivational speach! sigh.... 5 weeks down 8 more to go... medical (stuck at home) leave sucks!

My name is SGT Sleepy and I'm a Bronco OWNER!!! BUAHAHAHA I paid $2300 Runs drives pretty good. Straight body and paint. interior really clean. Fuel gauge and thermo won't register... Switch on dash wont roll rear window up or down but works with the key. Gonna do a quick tune up and go from there. Smog is do and so is registration... $220 later....sigh Cali sigh...

I'm gonna dig into it tomorrow... For it's first trip of 312 miles I'm getting 15 mpg freeway,**** of a way to start my relationship with it. Motor is a lil sputtery, Seafoam and tune up might help? Tranny doesn't like jumping to a lower gear for those hills without a hardshift. Slowing down coming to a stop it hardshift into 1st. Tranny check tip is missing... I'm guessing it's in there somewhere? 75 mph at 2000 rpm with 31" Pretty good...? 200K miles on it. Motor rebuilt by Ford at 90K. My 4 month old E. Mastiff "Dozer" curled up on the front seat and kept my company the whole 6 hour drive without complaint so it must be a nice rig...

Hey Sarge,

I wanted to see the pictures of the new rig, but couldn't get them. Are you going to upload some new ones? I wanted to check it out since I have an XL also.

When I bought my Bronco, the rear window worked with the key and not the switch. It ended up just being a bad switch and once I finally got around to replacing it, the window worked fine. Hopefully your issues will be easy fixes.

Good luck with the 'new' Bronco.

Hey Sarge,

Glad you found something. Sounds like a nice ride. I have gotten as much as 17MPG on the highway, with the cruise on and a long trip. 15 is good for a truck that's sputtering. I found if I keep the rpms at 2000 or under I get the best mileage. ( beast runs 2K @75 too with 285-60-18s...about 32") The price sounds good too.

Hope you have a blast with it. Good Luck.
