I have an opportunity to buy a 1979 bronco. It has a 351 engine, with 4 speed transmission. Some rust in rockers, doors, and rear quarter panels. Runs well (according to owner). He wants $1000 for it. I understand that these trucks have very desirable drive-train components (tc, tranny, engine and axles). This sound like a fairly good price for a rusty truck that runs good? Second question, I've heard that these trucks are hard to stop (i.e., poor braking). True? Thanks much for my naive questions.

Sounds like a good price for a rusty Bronco. As far as the braking, as long as the stock braking components are in good shape they stop just fine considering their size. My Bronco is lifted with 33" tires and I find the braking to be ok. You can always do the F350 brake upgrade for ceap too. For the drive train components, the 351 is a tough engine and can be made to perform well very cheaply. 4 speed is a good transmission, most likely has an NP205 transfer case which is bulletproof, and a Dana 44 front axle and 9" rear end. Very tough drive train. Hope this helps!
