new rear end gear say need notched cross pin

i am getting a new gear for my dads bronco for christmas and it says on broncograveyard that i need a notched cross pin. i know what a cross pin is but do you notch it yourself or do you have to buy one. i didnt have to do it on my other one >-

I was looking at a set of 4.88's today in the ford motorsport catalog. It also said requires notched cross shaft. They sell the cross shaft for $39.95 I think. I wouldn't notch it yourself, Its a hardened piece and not worth the breakdown for 40 bucks.
