can you hear the motor working, or no sound?
no, no sound, i just know the motor works because when i connected directly with the battery of the truck it sounded and moved. But once in the back with its own cables it doesn't do anything

A common problem is with the tailgate latch switch. Try pushing on the left side while operating the rear tail gate key switch. Also, another common place for failure is where the wires flex when the tailgate is opened and closed. Attached is a diagram of the circuit incase you need to do some probing with a volt meter.

Sorry to jump n on this thread, but I'm having a similar problem in my '89.........

I hear a repititve clacking sound that's louder trying to go up than it is down. Window doesn't move in either direction though. I took the actual window out and the arms will move up (not at all smoothly though), but nothing on the way down. Matter of fact, while tryingto go down, the arms pop out of place and spring a few inches in the opposte direction they're supposed to be going (thought I'd almost lost my arm, lol). Not sure what my next move should be - watcha' think?

If you can hear the window motor operating then it is probably the gears inside the motor. They can be replaced and look like the attached picture. You can get a set from Jeff's bronco Grave yard http://www.broncograveyard.com or LMC Truck http://www.lmctruck.com or some auto parts stores have them in the Help section.

The little yellow cylinders you can see under the gear tend to self distruct after years of opertion.

Good luck,

:)>-

Awesome!!!! Next beer I drink is for you SeaBronc!! Can I repair this by removing just the motor, or will everything else need to come out as well?

Just pull the motor and remove the ger cover.

Went to the local Advance Auto store. They didn't have the gear on it's own, but they did have the rebuild kit. Glad I got that. The plastic gear had shattered and left pieces all in the grease. The kit had grease with it so I was able to clean the plastic out and repack. Window is working now - thanks a looooootttt for the help. I was going to replace it all, lol. This $29 kit was a much better alternative - Thanks a lot Seabronc!

I kept the metal piece to the gear as well as the top to the gear housing. If anyone needs or wants these, let me know. I 'd be more than happy to give them to someone.

One last thing - my window is actually a replacement. The previous owner had shattered it before I bought it. It doesn't move up and down smoothly - actually I had to pull it up to help the motor. Is this because it hasn't been moved in a while, or perhaps the replacemnet isn't a correct fit? How hard is it to take the side channels out of the tailgate?

Pulling the channels out is a 2 bolt hookup, space might be a little tight. With the window up, do a visual inspection of the channels to see if anything is in them and run your finger in the channel too. While you're in there it couldn't hurt to spray some penetrating oil on the moving parts.

Take the motor apart and check the gears. Seabronc has a good write-up on that happening. My passenger side did the same thing, it bounced and you had to push the window down. I had an old tailgate sitting around and they use the exact same motor! I pulled the tailgate motor and used that.

ok here is an odd twist to a question that i am almost sick of seeing maybe the moderator could pin one of the posts on this so we dont see it every week but any way my 93 has been half butchered and the dash switch is shot as well as no key switch can i run a battery neg to the bumper and positive to the downside of the switch to lower or am i better off unbolting the motor and reg then pushing window down?
