I have a 88 fullsize 4x4, w/ 351 i just picked up for 20 bucks. i put a battery in it and it cranks. i sprayed some carb cleaner down the intake and it fires up just long enough to burn it out, put new fuel in tank. don't here pump prime when key is turned to on position. just woundering if there is a fuel shut off button like the ford cars have, or if this is a comon problem and what sequwence of actions to take to fix with out emptying my wallet. thanks for your time and addvice..

There is a inertia switch under the dash on the firewall. It may be popped and can be reset by pushing the button in. The attached diagram is for an 85 but the fuel control is pretty much the same. I believe that the 88 still had two fuel pumps, one in the tank and a high pressure one on the frame rail on the left side. I'll see if I can find a diagram for the 88. If you have 12V at the pump, check that the ground is also good.

Good luck,

:)>-

Have you checked the circuit out wit a volt meter? If not, I wouldn't go spending a bunch of money on fuel pumps until I knew which one is bad, if at all. Use a volt meter and check for 12V at both wires on the inertia switch. If you don't have it on the Brown lead, then your problem is most likely the fuel pump relay. If it is good there make sure you have it on the pink with black stripe wire. If good there go to the fuel pumps and check them for 12V on the pink with black stripe wire. If you have it there, make sure the ground is good (black wire), do a continuity check to the battery (-) terminal, it shouldn't be more than a couple of ohms. If all that is good, then you have a pump problem. It is not likely though it is probable that both pumps are bad. The one you have a better chance of hearing is the one on the frame rail. If it is not working there is not enough pressure for the to feed the injectors. It is also the easiest to replace. The one in the tank is a PITA and unless the previous owner made an access hole you need to drop the tank to replace it. If you determine it is a pump problem do the frame rail one first, (providing it is not working).

Good luck,

:)>-

P.S. I found an 89 diagram and it is the same.
