help with differential

the differential has the slip shaft connected through a universal, and another shaft.

if i release the three bolts on the differential, will both shafts come right out of the housing, or do i need to dissect the diff.?

any help is appreciated, i need to change that universal and add in my new slip shaft.

the only way that i can see is to change the universal under the truck, which will be difficult to say the least.

When you unbolt the driveshaft from the differential yoke, all you need to do is push the end of the driveshaft away from the yoke enough to clear. The ds should stay together unless the slip yoke is very worn out or broken. But you can change the slip shaft or lower end of the ds without removeing the other section from the transfer case, JSM84

the slip shaft is very worn, it needs to be replaced, that is why i need to get that u joint out of the shaft assembly, it is difficult to explain w/o pictures, but i am at a library, i cant save anything from my camera to post.

how do i change the slip shaft then?

There is a shaft that goes inside the differential wich attaches to the u joint, then the slipshaft, then the drive axle (the long piece), wich slips inside the slip shaft on one end then, attaches to another u joint on the opposite side, then to a smaller shaft that meshes with the wheel

Think I got it, you're referin g to the front TTB differential/axle and not the driveshaft, correct? To remove the axle shafts from the passenger side, you first need to remove the brake rotor and hub to get to the outer axle. To remove the inner axle that connects tothe chunk or gears, you will have to pull the chunk out from the rear of the housing. The inner axle should come out with the gears, then you can pull out the C-clip that holds it in place. I have seen some models without the C-clip, so you may not need to pull the gears. I did on my 84, but think your 82 may be one of those without that clip. FYI, the driver's side short axleshaft just slips right out once you remove the hub assly.
