Fellas:

New guy here, just got my first eb 73 its completly stock (the back fenders hasn't even been cut) after cutting, lifting and all that.I would like to regear it, now I know that axle wise there are tons of gear sets to go with but what about transfer case gears?

I just got rid of my suzuki samurai and it had a 5.14 to 1 in the T-case and I LOVED it. Does any company make lower T-case gears for the eb?

thanks in advance

If your big daddy deep pockets go with a Atlas T case, but it you want to stuff a lower gearset in the D20... isnt worth it really. I would rather gear the axles than anything. Tell us a tire size and what kind of wheeling, and drivablity you want and do and i might give a suggestion on axle ratios.

This is not a dd,but will have to drive to the trail( sometimes 125 miles, when we go to uwharrie).I'm thinking somewere in the 35/36 range as far as wheeling manly rocks and old fire roads,I leave the deep mud alone whenever possible.

i would like the tcase geared so when you need that little extra gear its there.why is the d20 not worth the gears? any other options besides the atlas? o and it has an auto in it also

Thanks

You can regear the D20, but it costs just a shade less than buying an Atlas for roughly the same gearing. There are a few other alternatives, one is the NP203, though I don't rightly remember what the gearing is for those t-cases and another is the STaK box that is about $600 more than the Atlas. The other thing, what tranny are you running? the 3 speed? NP? T-18? NV? C-4 or 6? That also helps in determining what gear ratio you should go with.

It has an auto in it.I think it's a c-4 not 100% sure. Will be runnin a 35/36 tire size too.

Well, to be honest, if you have a C-4, you are gonna have to swap that transmission out to get a good crawl ratio. Play around with this gear calculator, it is a Bronco one, a little out dated, but still a good tool. Put your stuff in and then put my measurements in and see the difference. Don't worry about the "Crawler" that is for an extra gear box like a Klune or Cold Duck system which you don't have. I am gonna guess that right now you are 3.50 gears, add what we do know, C-4 & J-shifter x-fer (73-77 had J-shifter which is a higher geared x-fer than the T-shift which was from 66-72). Using this gear calc. you come up with a ratio of about 20:1 final crawl ratio. Now put in my stuff, NP435, T-shifter, & 4.10. With that, you should come up with about 67:1 crawl ratio. To get close to me,you are gonna have to ditch the auto tranny (at least according to this gear calculator). Needless to say, if you want something that is built for creepy crawly action, your best bet is an NP435, but if you want the highway ability, then you can go with a 5-speed NV4500. Any way you cut the cookie, you are gonna be doing more than just regearing the axles. Hope this helps you somewhat, I know it isn't much, more like muddying the waters, but if you play with this gear deal, you can get a better idea of what you want.

HAHA...welcome to the club. I have close to 20k in mine that I have reciepts for, probably more than that if you count the ones I lost. But I will tell you this right up front, there isn't another vehicle on the planet that is as versitle, nimble or generally capable as an Early Bronco. I know you said you had a built Zuk, but if you put the same type of effort into an EB, you have yourself a better vehicle now than you did....obviously I am being biased, but I also believe every word of it, no matter the arguement. Just have fun with it, 'cause it doesn't have to be done tomorrow.
