Gas pedal is sticking

When I press the gas pedal down, it goes down about an inch and then stops. I have to press really hard and eventually it'll POP past this point and I will again have a full range of motion in my gas pedal until it comes back up. Once it comes back past that point, I have to POP it past the stuck point again. This is horribly annoying, fuel wasting (as it revs every time because I have to press so hard), and is at times dangerous when I'm trying to move through bumper to bumper traffic because every time I do this, the vehicle lurches forward with a fully pressed gas pedal.

Does anyone have any idea what would cause this? I've taken the carburetor completely off and checked all the linkage. From what I *see*, it appears to be fine. Secondly, it's very difficult to diagnose because it doesn't really do it when the engine is off. There was also no identifiable start to the problem, it just started and has been doing it off and on (more on than off, but yes, there are times when it works just fine). I'm about ready to permanently park the thing simply because of the gas pedal.

I'm open to any suggestions.

Have you operated the linkage by hand at the carb with the engine off? Is this a new carb? I had a similar problem when my carb was new which was caused by an unused part of the linkage at the carb. For the life of me I can't remember what it was catching, but I cut it off the linkage and everything has been just fine since. All I can tell you is that it was something on the linkage adapter but not used for my application.

a guess here; sounds like my old 396 Nova with a bad motor mount; throttle linkage would bind, fan hit shroud, etc.

Did you try unhooking linkage to carb. at the carb. (w/carb on manifold) & trying the throttle for binding..with eng. on and with eng. off?

Finally fixed it yesterday. It turns out that the reason it would bind with the engine running and would stop as soon as the engine was off was because it was the pump lifter linkage that was bent, and since that is constantly moving while the engine is running, it would always bind no matter what. It was bent pretty well too, and had a lot of grooves cut into it from the surrounding parts. I replaced the little inch long linkage bar and it works great.

The pump lifter linkage is on the carburetor and it looks like you have electronic fuel ignition.

Have you sprayed WD40 down the accellerator pedal hole inside the cab? Mine was sticking really bad for a while there too.
