I have a 1994 XLT with a 5.0, E40D, manual hubs and transfer case.

I have been having some trouble from my front breaks. The pistons seem to be free moving in the calipers and the slides are free, but they seem to be getting too hot (I can smell them). The rear drum pads are engaging and are adjusted properly as best I can tell. I have ceramic pads now after one rotor got rather warped. When I replaced the disc the auto parts store had some that were like the ones on my Bronco with a minimum thickness of 24mm they also had some that were minimum of 28mm (they looked about a half inch thicker which is more than 4mm) which they said were for axle ratio differences. I was wondering could I use the thicker rotors even with my stock ratio? Will the stock caliper open wide enough with new pads? I would think thicker is better, fact is I just don't know.

I had trouble with brand new rotors AND new pads getting enough clearance. Had t oremove all the shims for the pads, and drive around for a week or two until the calipers/ pads quit dragging. AS cheap as calipers are, you might want to replace them if they're sticking. The most important advice is to properly torque your lug nuts, as overtightening will warp the rotors. Go to 100-120 ft-lbs.
