1982 bronco lifter

i got the drive shaft in but i put it in fourwheel drive and lock it in and it just makes a thumping noise my bro jason jumped in and put it in reverse and i got under the truck and it looked like the driveshaft was loose because it was spining but the tires were not and the drive shaft was like it was jumping around so i tighed up the nuts and the same thing i was wondering if the shaft has to be sertain way for it to work properly. my dad said it sounded (the noise) like it was coming from the pumkin. my brother in law thought it was the hubs let me know thanks for help
