I just got another bronco recently and never checked out the spare. After some mods and putting on the 38.5's I decided the spare was useless and went to take it off. I noticed it had a lock so I got out the lock cutters since it didnt come with any extra keys and just before I cut it I noticed that the lock had a FORD stamp in the steel. I have never seen this before, even after all the years of working at a salvage yard.

So, is this something I should be saving? Could a Ford dealership possibly get me a key for this? Even if it is common I still would like to get the lock off without damaging it just cause its cool. Next option is to hack up the tire carrier to get the lock off in one peice without the key.

I plan on calling ford tomarrow and see about getting a key. Figured it'd be a good lock for the hi-lift if anything.

ya i guess i could call a locksmith in a few days and see what they'd charge
I love finding old Ford trinkets in vehicles. I just purchased a 71 Bronco and when I was looking it over I noticed the headlight has the ford logo on it, and it still works. I took it off and saved it. (hey ya never know)

My 84 had the original Ford spare tire lock, I think it was made by York. IF you're going for the original/concourse look, I would defintely keep that one and tgry to find a new key. A good locksmith should be able to make one in about 10-15 seconds, but will charge your $60-$80. I was re-installing the rear bumper last week, and found a secret compartment key holder taped to the bumper bracket. Inside, it held a spare ignition, door, and spare tire key, along with a couple of extras for the shop and shed locks. I'll return those last two to the original owner. I am thinking that the spare tire lock keys are generic, in that 3 or 4 types will unlock all of the locks Fords ever used. You might ask the locksmith if you call them out, you can learn alot from them dudes!!!

Haha, I went to a junkyard the other day and looked in the center console of a 78 bronco and found all the dealers brocheres and the sales pamphlets. Happy to say theyre sitting in my 78s glovebox now. I thought that was cool. Unfortunately I found nothing else I needed at the junkyard.

I bought a 79 Bronco from the Original owner about 10 years ago, (Grandpa bought it off the showroom floor) I saw the same lock on my spare carrier, he said that's what they came out with from the factory, but most people lost the keys, and just replaced them with either masterlocks, or took them off to use elsewhere, but he didn't trust people enought to leave his spare without a lock. Nobody puts them out like that anymore. if you can save the lock, save it. At the very least Ebay it to some collecter always looking could make hundred or more just on a padlock if you wanna sell it.
