flipping rear shackles

Just bought a 1978 Bronco, need info on flipping rear shackles to gain a little extra quick hieght. Is it as easy as just drilling and flipping over or am I going to have to do anything else. Am also adding a couple extra spring leaves.

you cant just drill and flip over because the bottom of the factory shackle braket is closed up. your best bet is to buy new flip brakets from sky manufacturing for around $140 last time i checked.

Sky manufacturing is a really good way to go. Comes with everything you need, Although the grade 5 bolts it comes with are a little questionable. You will have to drop the fuel tank to access the inside of the frame rail To bolt them in, But if you think about it, when was the last time the tank was out? Most likely never, Good time to check it out, maybe clean out some 25 year old crud.

I know of some guys that went the cheap way and grabbed some shackles of a 3/4 ton chev from the scrap yard but thats alot of work in the mud/ or cold depending on where you live. I think the Sky shackles were 115.00 before taxes and shipping.

i used the the sky shackles on my 79 i like em alot my truck sits level with those and the deaver front springs with a winch bumper. sure beats blocks i think they were around $135 i cut my exhuast into dumps cause the side exit was right where the shackle has to be. once you get a set it seems easy enough to make another set for a buddy just 3/8" plate, 1/4" plate, and 4x4x1/4" square tube.

I've got them on my 78. Beefy looking & heavy, i guess they should be if they are holding up your truck. I had the rear bumper off already and i didnt haev to take my fuel tank down. Maybe because i have a 3" body lift too?

i had the same post a while back ... shy jacker does have a good kit mounts right up to your stock shackel place i think there is another link you can go to to get more info but i will have to get back to you on it

Did you weld them on or drill and rebolt. I just bought a set of rear springs to add a couple leafs and they gave me the front brackets

Cool idea I have a set of front brackets. I just read on another post that if you do the flip you have to use some axle relocating plates??? what are these and are they neccessary? Thanks

I dont think Im sold on welding those brackets on there like you did . The heat effected area there has a very good chance of cracking . Just my 3 cents /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Thats kind of what I was thinking, but I've seen it on a couple others and they have had no problems. I wouldnt do that to mine though

depends how good and what type of weld you use, me personally, id bolt them FIRST and then lay a nice bead of weld all around them, id use at least 4 grade 8 bolts to hold them in place, ive always known bolting and then welding is the best way to go

Well here in Michigan with the way those things rot off theres no way Id weld them to the frame . 4 grade 8 bolts is just fine the combined shear strength of the 4 is more than adequete to retain them . If there welded theres a whole lot more work to changing them . /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
