EFI 5.0 converted to carb?

anybody out there converted an EFI 5.0 to carbuerator? 

I have a 1992 bronco with a 5.0/5spd powerplant and want to swap out the complete driveline into a different bronco but want to simplify things.  I have a non running 82 bronco w/302 2barrel for bits, just not sure if my 82 parts will bolt onto the 92 longblock?  

my gas engine knowledge is somewhat limited,  been truck/coach mechanic for many years and I usually convert everything to diesel.  trying to build a cheap springtime toy on a small budget with lots of parts in reserve.  5yr old son is on my case for a mud truck this year............. 

experience would be awesome,

I plan on building an inline 6 cyl 300 at a later date for the application, but right now it will be a 302/5.0

EFI Swap to Carburetor; "...It's actually a pretty simple swap. Basically all of the computer/sensor stuff can be scrapped. You won't need any of it. What you will need...a carb (obviously), a new intake manifold, a new distributor, an ignition control box (like an MSD or Mallory box...I've had good luck with MSD 6A boxes so long as they're not exposed to significant heat), and a carb fuel pump. The EFI pump is way too strong for a carb so you'll need something like a Holley carb electric pump. The ignition stuff is pretty straight forward, but for a working tach you'll need to find the tach wire in the ignition wiring harness and attach it to the positive side of your coil. I know in Mustangs this wire was green with a yellow tracer. It may be the same in your Bronco, but it's good to double check. For a carb I would use something like a Holley 600cfm double pumper or a slightly smaller Carter carb. I had a 625cfm Carter on my Mustang before I switched over to a turbo'ed EFI setup and it was a little too much for the motor. One point worth stating is that if you have an automatic transmission that has overdrive (like an AOD), you'll need an adapter for the TV linkage on the transmission since AODs never came on carbed motors. One is (or at least used to be) available for Holley carbs through Sacramento Mustang, but they retail for just under $100. If you have a 3 speed like a C4 then all you'll need to do is make sure the carb has a kickdown linkage. Mind you I got my old Carter to work with my AOD...but I think that was just sheer luck. just what I was hoping for, simple swap. /

bronco will be a driver, but I only work 5miles from home.   I want to use up some of my parts without spending money I don't have.  funny how 1 income and 3kids loads up the overdraft.........

I am trucks/parts rich, CASH POOR!

I like the 80-86 Bronco look and might just put the 82 front clip on the 93 EB and swap the rear wheel lip panels when they get ruff.  I can squeeze another Bronco into the 2 car garage so I can tinker until the warmer weather.

#1    lift the rotten body off the 92 XLT 5spd switch the 5.0 to carb/intake/dist/fuelpump/etc. then put the solid 93 tub and doors on,  put the manual pedals/dash in,  put the 82 front clip on.

sounds like a good plan?  might even get the kids to help?  girls 11 and 9  , but the little guy at 5 is pushing harder. )

Okay, you guys seem to be the one's to help with an issue I'm having.  I recently aquired a Bronco with a 5.0 rebuilt and converted to carb.  Starts and idles great, but if you try to get moving too quickly it will stall out and die.  It may be "cold natured" but I think fuel starved.  Frame mounted fuel pump.  C6 transmission and 208 transfer case (I need to install the front drive shaft).  Two barrel carb.  Although I'm tempted to start dealing with this by going to a four barrel carb and intake, I'd like to make sure I'm not missing the root issue.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you for the welcome Al.  I appreciate the advice with respect to the forum, I'm here to learn.

I don't currently have an 85, but I used to and it was one of my favorite vehicles of all time.  I kept the cap of most of the time and it was great for hauling my SCUBA gear all over.

I'll look over the links, thank you.  No visible smoke of any color out of the exhausts.  I just acquired this truck, a 93 with a rebuilt (less than 5,000 miles) 302, new C6 and 208 transfer case.  I haven't started wrenching on it yet, I've been looking for a good place to start.

One of the causes could be a vacuum leak.

Especially if the vacuum hose to combination TAD/TAD valve is loose; it's between firewall and intake manifold, out of eyesight of course! A step ladder helps to see it.



Vacuum Reservoir (coffee can) often rusts on bottom.
