I have a '72 bronco that out of the blue the speedometer went crazy. it works fine from 0 to 20mph but after that it pegs out and make a very high pitched sound inside the instrument cluster. Any thoughts on what the problem is and how to fix it. Any help would be awesome!

There are only 3 components involved: the speedo gear, the cable and the speedometer. Based on what you said, it sounds like the speedometer needs replacement. Also, the end of the cable may be bad, take it out and make sure the cable end is OK.

Good luck,

:)>-

I've found that the cables break internally somewhere and need to be replaced from time to time.

If its loose on the back of the dash its not going to be engaged, maybe it vibrated loose. Also check at the t-case where the gear is. Make sure its still connected and the teeth look good. Then replace the cable. I've never seen a gauge fail but it could be thats the tough part to figure out. Good luck!

sounds like a cable problem to me . my mustang did that and it was the cable.

Yeah I second the cable!!! every mustang I have every had has done that and makes that weird noise!! Now I did have one that I messed up a tooth on the plastic drive gear and it caused it to get real crazy as well!! Hope this helps
