I put a 390 motor out of a 7 Ford . Into my 78 bronco. The store clerk sold me a coil for a ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTOR. I am getting a coil for the POINT DISTRIBUTOR and instead of putting the regular coil they take. I was wondering if I put a high voltage coil in it. Would it cause points or distributor to burn out fast? Thanks ahead of time.

Yo Johnny,
I can't offer an opinion right now.

My guess based on other folks is it
1973/79 F100/350 & Bronco:
COLF-12250-A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-37)

Or
Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-84A)

MOTECH may help!

Its a 1974 --90 motor. I also heard that the oil coil is suppose to stand up--not laid down. Well all the Ford I have--56,64,75,66--all the coils lay down. I have a point distributor in it. I was thinking if I put a hotter coil in it. To help gas mileage---it might also burn the plugs or points out sooner. Then a regular coil. Thank Al. Hope you are feeling better.

When I first got my 82 Bronco here in Arizona (no smog checks in my county), it had an incomplete ECC III CA ignition system that someone put a coil and points distributor in. I did the same thought process as you and put an Accell Big Yellow Super Coil in with the resistor that came with it in. It did seem to give a little more power and a slight highway mileage gain. BUT, the points pitting faster!
My experience was the same with other points distributor systems when installing bigger, higher-powered coils.

That,s what I was afraid of and didn,t want to waste money doing it and thought the same thing might happen to the plugs. I did put hot plugs in another --different 390 and it pitted the pistons. Thanks alot. Merry Christmas an a Happy New Year and a brighter --happy and safe future.
