I just picked up a used 96 XLT and it has a leather interior, but the rear seat belts do not seam to auto retract? Am I doing something wrong? How would I put my two kids seats in the back of the truck if the belts do not retract??

I am not screwing with you, why would you ask that?

The manual says to pull the belts out all the way until they click, and then they should retract and lock as they do..my wifes old Explorer did this in the rear seats and I was hoping the Bronco did too so I could put my two kids car seats back there..but that doesn't seem to be the case....

any input??

The Shoulder belts in a 96 are retractable; the seat belt on da bench is just adjustable'

the shoulder belt can fit thru the car seat's section that accepta a belt on outboard

also;

Ford will pay their dealers to install tether anchors (Program R7C); in the front, right-hand and all second row seating positions. It is easiest to install a tether anchor at the second row, rear, center seating position.

It is free. Can also be used to secure cargo. etc.

Source: by miesk5

Had it done this year for free

Part # for rear seat center Kit is F2TZ-98613D74-A (Kit - CHILD SE)

Here is the Entire Service Procedure in my site's TSB Section

One thAng tho; in the Service Instructions, Ford has one error, in this paragraph: "Locate the rear seat cushion latch and the rear seat back latch striker (62440). The rear bolt holding the rear seat back latch striker to the floor pan is the bolt ____ (Ford forgot to include "hole" here; & the Kit contains a new Bolt that is slightly longer than this original bolt) used for mounting the tether strap bracket (refer to illustration). Refer to Tether Strap Attachment for the Second Row Center Seating Position in this section."

Also, needed a lot of PB Blaster and an air gun to remove the frozen nut under da floor pan.

And read Owner's Guide for a lot of other child safety seat info;here is one on-line

incl;

Installing Child Safety Seats

& Attaching Safety Seats With Tether Straps

The belts don't seem to be retractable (auto retracting anyway, as in , you pull them to a certain point, they click, and then they retract and lock in place as they do..)...unless there is a special way of making this happen....

Also, I called a local Ford dealer today and they said they are not doing this TSB any longer and the parts are obsolete due to the age of the vehicle..is this the case? Should I contact another Ford Dealer and discuss with them?

Also, do you have a TSB number for the article you posted? Something I could reference with the dealer?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks for the help.

yo,

Call another Ford dealer; had same prob.; one dealer said Bronco was too old; 2nd dealer was happy to do it; mainly bec. they are reimbursed by Ford for the parts and labor.

It is Program R7C. No TSB # that I can find right now. Had job done last year, so info was current at the time and should be now.

If they won't do it, ask for the # or have em call the local Ford area rep.

and, have em put in all 3 tether anchor kits; they need to remove the rear seat for the outboard ones and can inspect seat belts for you.

your other Q about retraction; which belt are you describing. Did you read the Owner's Guide or the Link to it I posted?

Copy the section that your are ref. to here and we can go thru it.

GL!

and;

"Dealership tether anchor retrofit programs

Free installation programs were established by some vehicle manufacturers. These should be honored by the dealerships, as they are reimbursed by the manufacturers.

Not all dealerships are familiar with these programs. Use the references below if needed. (Canadian dealerships

are generally quite aware of tether installation.)

.....

Ford: Program R7C..."

Well, I guess I will be on to Ford Motor Company as I have called 5 dealerships and the ones who said they will do it cannot get the parts as they are apparently 'obsolete'....

ok, I hear ya; and I'd stay away from those dealers for future work.

I looked at my notes I made last fall and the 1st deaer I called was actually a Mercury dealer; they said go to the Ford dealer closer to my home since I wanted to wait and watch the install.

The local dealer installed it 2 days after I called em; they ordered the Kit from the Ford warehouse. I helped the mech. install the kit; they are ok locals.

The service mngr was able to dnld the Instructions from his pc via Ford.

Yeah, I walked the service manager through the steps and all that, gave him the part numbers of the kit and everyhing and they told me it was discontinued. As well, they were the 3/4th dealer to turn me down. Looks like, if FoMoCo can't help me, I will have an aftermarket shop install something...or maybe even do it myself with similar parts I was able to find online for adding lap belts.

So....after days of banging my head against walls, I was out cleaning the Bronco interior (floors needed some serious attention) and realized that the outside belts have the adjustable buckles, which means you don't need anchors in the floors or the retractable belts...I feel stupid for not having noticed that, but I guess I just assumed that the buckle was the same as my 98 F150 with the loose buckle peice that snaps into the receiver.....

so I put the kids seats in the Bronco this afternoon and we all went out for a ride....it was nice..lol

Sorry for all the posts and now I feel dumb....LOL

it happens Potter

The tether mod is for forward facing seats... it is still recommended.

This week, I'll try and stop by the dealership here and see shere the serv mngr looked up the tsb and what sys Ford has it in.

Also, print out that Owner's guide if you don't have the booklet in da Bronco. It shows a lot of info on child safety seats, etc.
