Is there an easy way to check the rear main seal with oil pan off? I see it is above the last bearing cap, being held on by two bolts. I'm just worried if I start looking around I may damage it.

Yes it can be replaced however, I've not done one.

Someone else who's done this,  may chime in  or, stop at an auto repair shop & ask for some tips.

If memory serves, they're two piece & the top one has to be pushed out & the new one pushed in.

There may be a small tool needed as well.

Sounds like this could be done then without lifting or removing engine? That is my biggest concern

I have an 88 5.0 EFI in mine and i changed my rear man without unbolting anything. It was a one piece seal I pried out (carefully of course) and used a seal/bearing installer to push the new one in. If yours is the same you'll need either the engine out or the tranny out to access. I dont have any pics but im sure yours on the older engines will be the same but i cant say for sure.
