I need some major help here. I bought my daughter a really nice EB series BII for her 16th birthday. The truck only has 79K original miles on it, and has been setting for just over 10 years. The reason it was parked was because the man I got it from bought it new for his son to drive to school. When his son graduated, the fuel pumps went bad. He bought his son another truck to drive, and parked the Bronco. I had to replace the fuel tank, the pumps, the sending unit and the fuel filter, along with the plugs, wires, Dis. cap and button. The truck started and ran fine, but when it reached normal operating temp, it would not start back up again until it cooled off. After talking with several people, I replaced the Ig. module. This had no effect. I talked with others, and they suggested to replace the temp. sending unit. I do that also, and same result. Then I was told that the Dist. would cause this problem, so I replaced the Dis. with a remanned unit and also the MAP sensor. This is where I think I really made things worse. Now, the issue that I'm seeing, along with it still not starting back up when it reaches operating temp, is that fuel is being dumped into all 6 cyl. I took the spark plugs out and removed the fuel pump relay and turned the engine over and it blew fuel out of all 6 cyl. The plugs were fouled bad. I bought new plugs and tried it again. This time, it did infact crank and ran rough. I rechecked the timing, and it is set to 10 degrees BTDC. It ran rough, and the dark smoke was pouring out of it. After running it at high RPM's, the engine finally cleaned itself up and stopped smoking as bad. I could tell that it was definately getting to much fuel by the smell alone. I then replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and this did not help as well. I still have the same issues. It was not dumping fuel into the cyl. before I changed the Dist. I am at a complete loss now as to where to go. I did talk to one individual and he asked me if I took the neg. terminal off the battery before I changed the dist. and I did not. I'm just wondering at this point if I need to do so to reset the computer. This thing is supposed to be my daughter's first vehicle, and I need it to be right before I turn it over to her. I need some help with this one, and any and all information will be very greatly appericated. Thank all of you in advance.

I will check that this weekend. It will infact turn over like its trying to start, but it just wont. It almost seems like it is not getting any fire from the coil, but I checked each individual plug and they are firing. I'm stumped bad on this one. What about my other issue I'm seeing now? Any ideas? Thanks so very much.

1986 Ford RANGER Recall ID from NHTSA: 85V116000

Auto Recall Date: 09/24/1986

Vehicle Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD

Estimated Vehicles Affected: 7886

1986 FORD RANGER Defect Summary:

THE ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL WIRING HARNESS INSULATION MAY BE DAMAGED DUE TO COPPER SPIKES PRODUCED DURING THE WELDING OF ITS WIRES. THIS CREATES A POTENTIAL FOR A SHORT CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE WIRES WHICH ENERGIZE THE FUEL PUMP, CAUSING SOME FUEL INJECTORS TO OPEN, DISCHARGING FUEL INTO THE ENGINE. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: FUEL DISCHARGED INTO THE ENGINE WOULD EVENTUALLY LEAK THROUGH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM TO THE GROUND. THIS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE IF A SOURCE OF IGNITION IS PRESENT.

Defect Consequence:

Remedy:

REPAIR WIRING HARNESS, CHECK ENGINE AND CATALYST FOR DAMAGE.

Notes: FORD MOTOR COMPANY,

And this would make alot of sense to why your b2 is acting crazy

Thats what I have going on here. I noticed the other day that when I was wiggling the wiring harness around the left side of the engine close to the fuel injectors that the fuel pumps would cycle on and off as if the key was turned off and back on. With this recall, am I going to have to completely replace the harness or am I going to have to just check each individual wire and replace if needed? Looking at the left side of the engine, around where the Ignition module is on the distributor is the wiring harness that I was wiggling and causing the fuel pumps to cycle on and off. Also, I noticed that I have a broken vaccum line that leads from the engine to the same port where the MAP sensor vaccum plugs up at. I am in the process of fixing that hopefully this weekend. Another question.... there is some sort of temp. sensor on the left side of the intake. What does that do and could that be causing a problem as well? I asked the folks at Advanced Auto Parts about that and it is some sort of Temp. sensor for the Intake? They told me that if both of the temp. sensors were going bad that I could see the same problem. I'm thinking I may have a wiring harness problem, but I'm just trying to cover all the bases. I do thank each and every one that has been there trying to help me with this crazy problem. My daughter loves that little bronco, and I just want it to be as safe as I can make it for her. As a fireman, I see alot of kids that are involved in accidents, and it breaks my heart to see any of them get hurt. I just want something that is going to be dependable for her. We are definately a Ford family, and this is the first bronco. I just hope it will last like the other fords we have had. Keep the info coming guys, and again I do thank all of you so very much.

You should be able to call a ford dealer near you, give them your vin number and ask if there are any outstanding recalls on it. YOU may also ask specifically if the one mentioned above has been corrected.

If not... bring it in and have them all done. IT is done free of charge to you.

Second, either scan for codes yourself, or take it to autozone where they will do it for free.

Let us know what the codes are.

Is your air filter clean?

Clogged, the car may start cold (rich)... hot_ too rich, maybe not.

How does the car run when it is hot?

The vacuum leak you noted near the MAP sensor *may* be the key.

Thanks Joe. I will definately check with my local Ford dealership and see if the recall was done to this one or not. One other quick question.... Is there a time limit on these recalls? Do you think they will have the part for this particular recall if this one was not corrected? The air filter was changed when I first started it. I do have the stuff to correct the vaccum leak now and will fix that this weekend. As far as running when warm.... operating temp shows in the normal on the guage on the dash, and other than a little bit of smoke coming from the tranny valve ( I do have a small bit of tranny fluid leaking into the intake) it runs wonderful. There is just a little bit of a "tic" like a hyd. lifter may be noisey. But other than that, it runs wonderful. I will get the VIN and call Ford.

Thanks again Joe

update: called my local Ford dealership on my truck. There is no active recall on this one. I talked to the parts department and asked them if they could get me a harness, and they told me that the harness is obsolete. So now i'm back in the same boat. Let me ask this. I looked up that recall, and tell me if i'm thinking wrong here. I can take that harness I have off and tape up each individual wire to correct this issue with the copper spikes..... am I thinking correctly or do I need to just try and find a harness? I have been calling around some to the local junk yards and most of them are telling me that they are damaging the harness when they remove the engines. I think I'm looking for a needle in a hay stack. So can I just take my harness off and tape each individual wire? Let me know guys. Thanks a bunch for all the help.

You can tape them up, as long as the wires arent broken. Just make sure you keep the tape tight on the wire, and wrap each one a few times to keep it from rubbing through again. And just for general knowledge, recalls do have an experation date, varies on the problem and manufacturer. Generally, it is about 7-10 years.

ok yall i got that thing fixed finally. The wiring harness, after taking it completely off, taping all the wires, and then fighting with it to get it all back where it belongs, didnt fix the issue. I looked at the starter. I took it off and took it to an auto electrical shop and had it checked. It was fine. I tried everything that I could think of, and finally was talking to another ford dealership mechanic (the third one in a week). You all will never ever guess what was going on....... here it is.

The intake air temp sensor was bad. The CPM was thinking the intake air was cold all the time, therefore dumping as much fuel in as it could for a cold start-up. After several hundred dollars, several several weeks of pulling my hair out, and looking, searching, and digging for answers, it was a simple $15.00 part.

Of all the forums that I posted this on, you guys actually took time to help me. I thank all of of from the bottom of my heart. You guys are the best. If yall need something, contact me at [email protected].

Again,

THANK YOU ALL

Joe
