Ive been looking into buying an 83 bronco with an E.F.I 5.0. It needs a starter cylanoid. I put a new one in today, but it still wont fire. I belive i put the wires from the I side on the S side. I was told this will fry the computer. Is this true?

Why did you put in a new solinoid? Did the starter work? If not, did you try to jumper the solinoid contacts with a heavy screwdriver?

yea supposidly it ran just a few days ago. They ran it out of gas, and it hasnt ran since. I changed the cylanoid becuase the one in it was bad. As far as the EFI, im not 100% sure. Im not sure its really an 83. The tail gate has the fuel injection badges and such on it also.

'86 for sure. Heard that '85's are too but I cannot confirm that. Does it still have the sticker in the door jamb? That will tell you the year.

The 10th position in VIN number will tell you the year. The VIN number is stamped on a metal plate located on the corner of the dash on the drivers side near where it meets the windshield. Depending on the year, you can find the VIN number in other places but it is always on dash.

Look at the 10th digit and compare with these numbers:

B = 1981 F = 1985 K = 1989 P = 1993 V = 1997 1 = 2001

C = 1982 G = 1986 L = 1990 R = 1994 W = 1998 2 = 2002

D = 1983 H = 1987 M = 1991 S = 1995 X = 1999 3 = 2003

E = 1984 J = 1988 N = 1992 T = 1996 Y = 2000

You will notice that some letters are not used because they can be confused with numbers (I, O, Q)

It was one of those "great ideas" some one had back in the late '70s to standardize all the VIN numbers on all cars in the US. All of the cars sold in the US use this 17 digit system. But, just like the computer guys, (the ones who used 2 digit dates and caused all the Y2K worries) they didn't think the plan all the way through. After 2009 they will be out of digits. Can't start over with A because then you dont know if it means 1980 or 2011; can't just add a digit because that would ***** up all kinds of things that get information from the 17 digit VIN. I wonder what they will do?
