I just purchased a rear driveshaft for my 78 ford bronco custom trailer special that came out of a 78 ford bronco ranger xlt thinking that it would bolt right up. I see the U-joints are the 1330 not the 1310. The donor vehicle has the yokes front and rear. Will the yokes mount right up underneath my bronco with out any problems on my transmission rear output and my rear end or are there spline differences or what???

Yup, you just ran head-on into one of the 78/79 differences. Your post isn't quite clear on some points. You *have* the driveshafts but are you asking if the yokes will swap out as well (I'm assuming that you also have access to the donor and can pull the yokes)? If so, yes, the 1330 yokes are a direct replacement for the 1310 yokes, just be sure to use new crush washers or the new yokes will leak. You can pull the 1330 yokes from the donor and swap them out for your existing 1310 yokes, no harm no foul, the spline count is the same.

What do you mean by crush washer ??? Is this the pinion sealsvyou are talking about??? What about the output shaft on the transfercase?? Will the 79 seal fit the same just pull the old one out of my 78 and install the new 79??

Ok, I guess what I'm talking about it the seal. It's a washer looking thing that can only be used once. When you torque down on the pinion nut the seal "crushes" into place and it can't be reused a second time, they're one-use parts. I thought I remembered there being a one-use washer that went under the pinion nut but looking at the scan I guess I must have been thinking about the seal. You usually get a new one with the bearing (or at least you used to, might be that you don't anymore). Attached is the scan from the factory manual for the transfer case yokes but the axles have the same arrangement.

I wouldn't reuse *any* of the seals, every time *I've* done that the damn thing leaked.

I am also wanting to know if I will have to change the bearing retainer and bearing when swapping my78 bronco transfercase rear yoke from the np205 to the 79 np205 rear transfercase yoke???

Hi BroncoBill I am going to clarify my last post. What I am wanting to know is if the seal on the bearing retainer is replaceable or if I would have to replace the bearing retainer between the 78/79 np205 transfercases??

Thanx Lee

Lee,

Yes, the seal on the bearing retainer IS replacable. To be honest with you it's been such a long time since I've done one that I don't honestly know what kit it's a part of or if you just get the seal all by itself but is IS a consumable part and you DO replace it, make no mistake about that. If you have a 19yr old counter guy telling you it's unavailable then go somewhere else. Once you disassemble it that far you most definately DO replace that seal. IF anyone tells you different then I'll scan & post the entire damn chapter but that seal DOES get replaced. It wears, it leaks and it *does* get replaced. Simple as that.

More to the point, if it IS leaking then look for the cause. More often than not it's a blocked/clogged/non-existent differential breather. The breather gets ignored then when the pressure builds up in the case the oil is forced passed either the axle seals or the pinion seal. The axle seal leaks take a long time to show themselvs because of the size of the tubes & the distance the oil has to travel, pinion seal leaks are seen much more quickly. They're both a bitch to repair so I guess the lesson there is to take an occasional look at the breather.
