77 F150 C-6

I have a 7 F150 4x4. 300, 6cyl. 350 gears. All original except the 4spd has been replaced with a C-6. Is there a 4spd auto that will swap out for just a little more hwy gear for a little less strain on motor for hunting/fishing trips out of state. Or do I need to put the original 4spd back in?

I believe it can be done,but the different trannies are different lengths and would mess up the spacing of the transfer case/driveshafts.Also the later E4ODs are computer controlled,and your 77 isnt,so that would be another problem.You might be able to get an OD unit(no tranny,just OD) to fit behind the transfer case,but you will need to modify crossmembers,shafts...etc.

The four speed and the c6 have the same final gear ratio, 1 to 1, so swapping them will not change your engine rpm. I recommend you get a tachometer and see if you are really turning your motor to fast. As far as the four speed overdrive auto trans goes i would stay as far away from those as possible, they are computer controlled and will need a seperate electronic transmission controller to shift properly. Also these transmisions (E4OD) are not very good and are very expensive to rebuild. You could think about putting on larger tires, this would help you lower the engine rpm. I guess I would keep my reliable and inexpensive c6 and maybe put on 33 inch tires. thanks rick.

Fords AOD will bolt up, has OD and will work just fine, they were used on a lot of Crown Vics and other cars and trucks. you will need to modify a few things like adding a throttle valve cable and other mods, but no more complicated than swapping to any other tranny. The AOD is available in an electronic version too, but it's not what you're after.

I would just put on larger tires like 33's. My 79 Bronco with a c6 and stock tires has to run at around 2700 rpm to be going 55mph. I would also like to see lower rpm's.

A late 80's AOD 85-89 is not computer controlled my '89 has an AOD and mine is at 2,000rpm's at 70. /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Putting on larger tires will increase your highway speed untill you hit a hill and then your engine will bog down. This is why you chage the gearing on your ring and pinon. By uping the size of your tires, you take the engine outside of it's optimum power band. By changing your pumkin gearto a higher number, you put the engine back into it's power band. I have a 79 Bronco with 33's and I changed my gears to 4.11's. At 3200 RPM, I can clip along at 70-75 MPH, but when off road at slow speeds, I still have the torque I need.

HAVE a AOD rebuilt with the rear shaft replaced/upgraded(can't recall the years) but the rear shaft had breakage problem don't know if the 300 big six makes enough to snap it but more likely than a stock 302

have you swaped a 2 barrel or 4 for the 1 barrel yet you will love it hehe

the aod has a bad rep but they can be fixed although they are expensive for some reason check fordtruck.com for more info

I tink you can get an overdrive gear from advance adapters or Gear Vendors but not sure.
