i talked to my boss who is a mechanic about a lift kit and instead of just a procomp or bds 6" lift he suggested that i do a 4" ranco lift with a 4 inch body lift. is this a good idea? has anyone done this before? is it better than a 6 inch lift?

If your boss suggested a 4" Lift let me know where he is located so I never go there by mistake!

A body lift that high will give you a world of trouble to install properly not to mention the UGLY factor.

I would suggest no more then a 1" body lift anything higher youll get into re-fitting or extending lots of things. Stick with a suspension lift, If you cant afford it yet, wait till you can. You will thank me later!

And as far as your boss goes ( HACK!!!)

disagree because , uhhhh i have a 3 inch body lift and have had it for hummmmm 4 or five years now with no problems !!! and never had to extend anything the only thing i would extend but i dont have to would be the drive shaft and that because the body and suspention lift is added up to 9 inches in all and i would just get it if i just if i flex it out alot but a four inch would be pushing it but you should be ok  make sure you get alot of opinions before you take someones advice!!

you can lift it 4" without changing anything if you like your transfer case shifter being burried in the floor or your steering shaft MAXED out!or your radiator sitting 4" to high. Again I said you would have to extend things if you wanted to do it the "RIGHT, SAFE way. anyone can hack a lift in there driveway in an afternoon. It's your truck you gotta sleep with your decissions. And then theres RESALE VALUE good luck getting fair market value for a botched up lift.

my truck is a manuel 5-speed does this mean my shifter would be 4 inches lower as well as my 4wd shifter?

Yes, your raising the body 4" higher then the frame so everything connected to the frame will need to be extended plus you will have to cut notches in the floor to allow room for the sticks to shift. as well as wiring and a host of other problems involved.

Lift kits a so inexpensive these days it dosent pay to lift it any other way.

A body lift is pretty much a poor mans lift kit. It only alows you to add bigger tires and thats all. A full on suspension lift kit will give greater ground clearance, plus better flex

speaking from someone who actually has a body lift on his bronco and has installed them the right way , you will need to get an extended shifter for the four wheel drive and the trans , a hurst could probably do.... you will need a fan shroud either cut or made to fit cause it will rub i would go with w 3 inch lift or just get a four in suspention cause four is kind pushing it i looked at mine today its got three and i had to extend the brake lines , but if you do a suspention lift you will have to extend the drive shaft so it will probably run the same amount of money and i am trying to resurve myself and not get into anbother argument with someone who doesnt even own a 80 to 96 model bronco :-& #036;

OK first off you obviously agreed with my first statement of having to extend certain things in order to make a body kit work (thank you)

second after looking at your truck I can see why resale value is of no concern to you. you obviously don't make enough money to build or maintain a truck the way it should be. Which is why you couldnt give that thing away.

I build vehicles for a living and the jeep I have in my profile was bought 5 years ago. It was Black, and bone stock. I had a total of 13,000 into it and with all the mods done to it I got 18,500. and that was after using it on the trails in AZ for three years.

Stop talking out of your ass you are showing your lack of inteligence (which im sure you do often)

OK on the subject

1) when lifting a vehicle (any vehicle for that matter) with a 4" body lift will you need to extend anything on the vehicle?

Your answer? and I quote" NO" I have a 3" on mine and didn't do anything although I could have extended my driveshaft

DRIVE SHAFT? that has nothing to do with a body kit, that is a suspension lift modification.

2)My answer "YES" you wil;l have to extend many parts of the vehicle such as, steering shaft, Transfer case stick, Transmission stick, and possibly will run into wiring issues as well as radiator cooling issues.

You then wrote that you DO have to extend the stick! ( oh what was that? speak a little louder) yes I know I was rite after all

Taking a Bow!

It is not necessary to be wright or wrong in this forum. Give your responses without making them personal or attacking some one else's opinion. Sometimes we all give a response that isn't the best. All you have to do is give your own answers to the questions leave it at that. Personal threats are definitely against the forum rules.
