Come home from work, she just died in the road. The engine turns over but won't start up. I was thinking fuel pump,  but before I get to deep I want some advice. Could it be a relay, module or the shut off switch?

Yo Billy,

WELCOME!

I assume it cranks over well, if not let us know.

If it's a 78 Bronco, see https://jalopnik.com/heres-how-you-diagnose-an-engine-that-wont-start-1717491831

But if efi equipped, see https://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/ford/4.9L-5.0L-5.8L/how-to-troubleshoot-a-no-start-1

Best bet is that you have a mom and pop parts store that you use and they can loan you tools such as spark or fuel pressure test, etc.  I prefer mom and pop stores over AZ, etc because they usually have better maintained stuff.

Thanks so much for the quick reply,  that's awesome.

Sorry, it would help if I told you what I'm driving.  1996 5.8 xlt. Cranks over good just won't start.

I checked a couple of things. I can hear the fuel pump come on when I turn on the key. The shut off switch is in the correct position. I Haven't had a chance to check the spark yet, Or to see if it is getting fuel, that's my next test.

What's your advice if there is no spark?

Ok. Tracked it down to my  Ignition control module. Replaces it and it cranked up fine. Last night come home it sputtered once pretty bad. Any ideas on that?

Yo Billy,

Is check engine light on while it sputters?

Yo should try to borrow an OBD II scan to obtain codes.  Some parts stores will loan you one using their loan a tool program.

➡️Was dielectric grease spread on ICM HEAT SINK?

Oh yeah,  I spread all over it. it hasn't acted up scene then. Maybe it was just a fluke. I removed the cats earlier this year and installed true duals. Of course my cel is always on. I tried the eliminator the o2 sensor with no luck. Have you heard of anyone using a diode on the o2 sensor to trick the computer? What about high flow cats? I really want to get that cel off.

Yo Billy,

Most go to high flow cats and have no codes nor CEL Lit.

Some who guess they suggest removing the CEL bulb, but that won't pass emissions test, where done.

I'm in west Tennessee, here emission code are not required. Since I have true dual exhaust, shouldn't I be able to get by with just one cat? I only have one down stream o2 sensor. If so, I assume the high flow cat will go between the upstream and downstream sensors on that one side (which is the driver side). I'm grateful for your wisdom and advice. Thanks for making this site available.

I had that happen to my 96 2 yrs ago it was my fuel pump, when you turn the key on before you crank with driver door open you should hear the pump energize for a second or 2 if you don't hear it, it's your pump
