hey guys looking at a mint 1985 bronco for a daily driver however i would like to put a 6in. lift with 35's do you think the stock 4.9L will have enough power and is the 4.9L the same motor as the 300 straight 6

If you re-gear it so that the final drive ratio stays the same as it is now (with the stock tire size), you should notice little difference in the way it drives. The 4.9L and 300 cubic inches are the same engine.

the 4.9 300 straight six motors are torque monsters...have more torque then a stock 302..i could spin 35's with no problem at all and the motor was pretty worn out....if you go bigger tire just be sure to re-gear and you will be ok

it is said that they have more power but after some research i have found thats incorrect, the 302's have a little bit more horse power and torque also, but it isnt very much, but they are good motors i dont think youd have a problem turning 35's , regearing up to 456 would benefit you greatly, then youd have some serious power

What information are you looking at, the source I have seems to be different. The 300 reaches 251 ftlb at 1600 RPM while the 302 doesn't reach 250 till 2000 RPM.

Being an inline engine, the 4.9 should have a flatter torque curve. That's a plus. I had a 90 F150 with the 4.9 and I couldn't have been happier with it. That engine is bulletproof. 16 MPG no matter what I was doing. I sold it about 8 years ago and it had 190,000 on it. The guy who bought it is still driving it with 290,000 on it. Body's almost gone but the engine purrrrrs like a kitten!

The 4.9L/300ci is a great engine. They have plenty of power for most applications, and will never die if you take basic care of it. I have heard of them getting pretty good mileage, but in my personal experience has shown better with the 5.0L/302ci. At least when pulling much weight.

summit racing sells cams and intakes for 300 I6's for a pretty cheap price that will also give more power...and if you search around you can find an aftermarket head for it as well

alan, if you re-gear the truck with 4.56:1's you will have a slight better throttle response then the factory tire and gear set up, if you are looking to really bump up performance and you have an OD trans, look into 5.08:1's youll feel like you went from a stock six cyl to a beefed up 8.

remember its all about torque down low, not horsepower.
