Yo Skip,

Welcome!

Won't crank or won't start? Cranking problem could be ignition switch, neutral safety switch, starter solenoid, starter, or any wiring in between those.

Check for 12v at starter solenoid "S" terminal with the key in START. If you get 12v there than check the solenoid, starter or cable connections. If you don't check the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or wiring between.

If it just won't start check for spark and fuel.

Borrow a spark tester and checkmfor spark at the plug wire ends.

  • Remove the air cleaner. While looking in the throat of the carburetor, pump the throttle linkage. A working pump will squirt fuel into the carburetor. However, if no fuel appears, verify the tank has gas and check the fuel line and fuel filter for blockages.
  • Visually inspect the pump. Inspect the fuel pump visually. If fuel is dripping, the diaphragm is faulty and you need a new pump.
  • Another way to check the pump is disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and place it in a container. Crank the engine to see if the pump is pushing any fuel through the line. Strong steady spurts of fuel mean the pump is working. No fuel or a weak stream means a bad pump, a plugged fuel filter, fuel line blockage.

Hi Skip, welcome...,

Ditto M5's advice..,  however you could give a bit more info.  to help us help you.  i.e. "will not start"

could mean eng. doesn't turn over when you turn the key to "start".  OR  it could mean the eng. spins when you turn the key but does not "come to life/fire up"..!!

A few drops of fuel down the throat of the carb., then turn the key (assuming the eng. rotates) will tell you if it's a fuel or ignition issue.  If it attempts to run.., it's not the ignition..., it's a fuel issue.  No fire.., it's ignition issue.

Have you R&R;d distributors B/4..?  you may have it in 180deg. off or somewhere in between.

Can you give us some info. about your mech. experience..?  And, any other info. about your rig & any other mods relating to engine setup..?  Assume this is a V/8.., is it auto or stick.?  Is it a stock 302, etc.

(I'm not sure what a "Duro spark box" is) (Is this an Autozone ignition module.?)

Point being, it's really tough to solve these issues without knowing the specifics.

Don't give up.., it's probably a simple fix.

Where did you get the Duro spark box? If Autozone, theirs is not compatible. I have tried 2 or 3 while diagnosing a starting problem and it ended up they did not work.
