Just picked up a 71 bronco that has an engine swap to a 351w with c-6 trans and np205 transfer case. The transfer case is hitting the frame and the tail shaft is about 1 inch offcenter. Has anyone had this combo before. Also looking to put a new steering colum in with the gear shifter on the colum what would you recommend.

Welcome to the Zone :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . Post a couple of pictures and add your truck's vitals to your signature for future reference. I'll let some of the Early Bronco guys answer your questions.

Good luck,

Hi EB., welcome...!

What's your pleasure...? Your post title is "1971 restoration"

351., C-6 & np205 are not in the resto. category.

IMHO., that's medium/high mods., & may have been set-up for rock crawl'n. :D/

Nice set-up however.

Drivelines normally don't run straight & equal dist. between the frame rails so as to clear the front dr. shaft. The eng. sits a bit cocked if you look close. :-B

Transfer touching the frame...? I have no clue on that.

What column is in there now..? Where's the shifter now.?

As Seabronc said., filling in your sig. will make all this info. known.

It can be updated at any time.

Pics, if poss, are good & helpful. >:D< <'>

To get it off the frame, you may have to move the tranny/t-case over enough and put a spacer between case and frame and build tranny and transfer case mounts with it in that position. Not an easy process but can be done.

Ok mabey I should of put 1971 remodel HAHA. I currently have a three on the tree column and would like to change it to a automatic on the column for the c-6. This is a bulid for a christmas present to my son. I want it to be very safe and user friendly. Will try and get profile set up asap. It is scheduled for a frame off inspection next week. Thanks.

Can I be your 3rd son...???

The sponsor on this board, broncograveyard.com, has columns & a 2% discount.

Sounds like your 3 sp. column was re-rigged to shift an auto.

You may be best served viewing (& calling) these sites as well;

http://www.wildhorses4x4.com

http://www.tomsbroncoparts.com

Columns can run fr. $400 up to $1000 depending on what other piece-parts are needed. (high end being "tilt" columns)

I had a similar messy set-up on one veh., so I left the column in & installed a cable driven floor shifter between the front seats. It worked fine & was under $200 as I recall.

When eng./trannie/transf. are swapped., there's usually other changes made.., like the dr. shaft lengths & the transf. case crossmember mount, as Bronc76 mentioned.

Do you know if it was orig. a V/8 or was it an I-6..?

That's likely a Ford 9" rearend if it's stock.... ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Have fun..!!

Yea I know what your saying... I would rather replace the column completely so it don't look so messed up. I have thought about a floor shifter, will just have to wait and get the pros and cons for them all. We are replacing all the drive shafts and I am going to have a custom tranny crossmember built for it. We are installing the 23 gallon gas tank today. The reason I think it is a 8 inch is because both the top and bottom of the housing are flat. In my experience, with 9 inches it is only slightly flat. When I takre the third member out to install the limited slip diff I will know 100%. It was an 302 originally and was swapped out to a 351. They added power steering during the swap.

I have flat spot (Ford 9") top/bottom...!

I believe the 8., (or is it 8.5 or 8.8) has a bolt-on cover in the back like a d-44.

The columns clean up nice. If they used good qual. joints/u-joints on the mods for the P/S shafts... that's good.

Upper & lower shafts & joints can get pricy.

You need to be sure you want to stay with that 205....would also be pricy to do the dr. shafts twice.

Just say'n..... >:D< <'>
