I have a 1984 Bronco. The 5.8 four barrel runs ok but is a little weak. i found a 5.8 2 barrel with low mileage and want to buy it but I dont want to go without my 4 barrel carb. Will it work ok if I switch the intake. Some say it will not and some say yes. Can anybody give me a definate answer to this?

Sure you can swap it as long as you swap the intake. I don't think you will be satisfied with the 2BBL. You will most likely get decreased gas mileage and the top end will be less than you have now. If the 4180 is getting tired, you can either rebuild and clean it or go for a new 4BBL, I have a 4160 on mine. If you plan on doing any serious Off Road then get a carb that is designed for the job. If you stay with Holley then probably a Truck Avenger.

Good luck,

This is probably to most common aftermarket upgrade on any engine in the world. Get rid of the 2bbl and replace that intake and put that 4bbl on it. Shouldn't take more that half a day to do.

Are you sure Seabronc? I might be reading it wrong too but it sounds to me like he bought an engine with a 2bbl, wants to swap it in his truck. But wants to keep the 4bbl. So swapping the 4bbl intake onto the new engine seems to be the answer. After writing this I can see where your coming from. Take the 2bbl off the new engine and swap to the old one. If thats the case and its a quick fix there are 2bbl to 4bbl adapters. I have one on my old 74 comet. Needed cash a few years ago and a buddy needed a carb so I sold it. I put the 2 barrel on the 4bbl intake via an adapter. It has incredible throttle response and power off the line but at top end its definately not near as powerful as the 4bbl

I guess you are right, it is hard to determine if he is actually talking about swapping engines and wanting to keep the 4BBL or if he wants to use the 2BBL on his existing engine  . In any event it will work in either direction and YES! Karryq you can do it B) .
