Ohh, hate to say it man but that's gonna hurt. Fenders up front are one thing because they're bolted on and can easily be replaced. Quarter panels are a whole different story. The only way to remove that panel is going to be to either cut if off with a cut-off wheel, body-saw, a torch or to drill out each & every spot weld. Once it IS removed the only way to replace it will be to either weld on a new one or to use some of the newer adhesives and glue it back on. You can get away with just cutting out the rusted area and then installing a patch panel but it's the same deal, weld it in or use the super-adhesives. Having something like that done at a shop will probably run you somewhere in the $800+ ballpark. A new quarter runs about $275 and then you're looking at several hours of labor at $40/hr PLUS paintwork.

Sorry Chief, wish I had better news for ya.

Matt,

Overall I agree with BB78 that it isn't gonna be cheap. You may want to consider taking her to a local body shop and give them an ask.

You might look into a high school program, and let the kids have a shot at it. Just a thought.

As we have seen prices for labor vary from one part of the country to another.

Good luck

joe

can you take us a pic of it?

if #21 will cover it then the panels is only $30.

The problem you are going to run into is most shops only do insurance claims. They dont tackle small jobs like that because its just not worth their time. Even doing a full resto they really dont make money on unless its a frame off. I had one shop quote my cousin like 15k to do some bodywork and paint his 71 f100.

I know you dont have the time but will you in the near future. really for the price of a how-to book($20), a grinder with cut-off wheels($30), ****** pliers($30) and adhesive($20) you can do everything but match the paint. If your paint is not metallic most paint shops can hook you up with an airless sprayer that will get you pretty close. We just used one at work to match a gold volvo but the metallics didnt work so well.

If a shop will even touch it they will gouge you on the price.

Well here's another alternative to consider, and this is how *I* learned. Find yourself a local Voke school that offers adult nightlife classes. They'll have a class in doing bodywork just like they offer classes in welding and mechanics. Sign up for the class and bring your truck. You'll have the opportunity to work on it 2 nights a week with an instructor looking over your shoulder and helping you out with the hard parts. There's a good chance that you'll only be able to fix the hole & bring it to primer in the time you'll have but $hit, a Maaco paintjob is $279 and almost anyone who can turn a wrench is capable of getting a truck ready for one of those & then then putting everything right afterwards. those $3K paintjobs are overhyped.

you can put a fiberlgass patch in there but the biggest problem you have is adhesion. After that you have dissimilar materials so the fiberglass will flex more than the steel. For such a small piece i dont know that you would have a problem. For just a 3" piece there are so many ways you could do it. You have access to the back of the piece so really you can cut out the smallest piece possible and lay some glass from the back side(after taking that down to bare metal and roughing it with 60grit). after the glass is laid fill it from the front with body filler. Make sure your panel is down to bare metal wherever you are going to have filler. The filler will not be very thick(18-16ga) so this is very acceptable. Sand it with 80grit to rough the shape, then 120-220. spray some primer over it and blend all the edges in. If you want you can get a color match spray can from your local parts store. Ive done this with my 85 at one point and the color was really close. This will be about $3. If you want to go farther find a paint shop and tell them you want a touchup setup but you dont have an air supply to work with. They have non-aerosol touch ups. Or you can just leave it primer for awhile.

if you can find the time you will much better off in the end.
