okay,

i need to upgrade the C4 auto.

specific needs are street and launch.

i see tons of auto v man arguments - but they just never get to any conclusions...

my problem is i am losing so much power to my torque converter that its like driving a sponge.

i want some muscle i can lay on the blacktop.

so do i just upgrade the auto or maybe get a new torque converter - or should i really be looking at a manual + clutch ?

i see there is a 4spd top loader manual (mustang i think) that drops in reasonably well ???

i am running a 351 and i am intending the EBrock RPM kit which should put me about 400hp / 400ft lbs - so it is all happening at lower revs but higher torque than a 302

i need opinions - dont want to get into this and discover i made a fundamental f*kup by heading down the wrong path.

bring me some wisdom...

thx guys.

Monza.

okay so i'm a road racing freak - but i'm still a brother if i'm doing it in a bronco - right ?

I'd like to see some input on this too.

I'd really like to go with a NV3550, but I'd like to know if it'll handle a 347 or 351W. I know Stacey David did this on "Crazy Horse", but how hard does he actually push that Bronco?

Hey Monza, I had a Mustang tranny in mine and got rid of it. At least I was told it was from a Mustang. It was a four speed non top load with shifting linkage. The tranny guy said it was out of a Ford pick-up. I got rid of it because of the linkage and the fear of binding.

I went with a used NP435 because it had a low granny first gear, no linkage and I have been told it basically is bullet-proof. So far no issue. Everyone I spoke to before I bought it tried to get me to buy the NV3500 or NV4500 but I couldn't swallow the price tag. I put a tranny in my Ford Superduty diesel for the same price they wanted for the 3500 and the 4500.

I would say it a personal preference for you, you have a ton of options with that motor. I know mine would rarely be on the freeway over 60mph and I would just drive around town, but spend a fair amount of time in the sand and dirt, sow the low gear came in handy.

yeh,

i've been PM'ing with Go Tac (he's a newbie here) but he has a ******* strip racing mustang with just about every available option.

so he has been a wealth of info on mating transmissions, converters and 351's for rapid launch.

i am slowly getting to the finer points of Stall speeds v torque and mechanical load.

man its an uphill education tho...

still one day i'll be the smart ass grinning to myself as i rip past in a rocket powered bronco.

: )))))))))))))))))))))

i will most likely start with a new Torque converter because mine is expecting a 302 on the front and getting a 351 - which makes the stall speed much higher - which means it takes even longer to lock it up and get 'direct' response.

the big question is whether to stay with the C4 or not... and i figure for what i want the C4 might be the best bet - it has the tallest ratio in 1st - so i get more revs for my torque - which is better for street.

the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of everybody else on the forum - yee hah!

sorry but i just see this rig pulling wheelies with flames comin out of the pipes.

Monza.

Hey, maybe someone else reading this can help you out. Does anyone remember what issue of Bronco Driver Magazine it was with the guy that had the purple EB with a blown 351 and a super charger pulling wheel stands in the sand? It was about 4-6 months ago I believe and on the cover was a red EB racing in the mud. He has huge sand paddles on the rear end and there was a few pictures of him pulling the front end up across the sand. Monza, you need the read this article and find out what this guy did.
