replacing motor soon... .any recommendations?

hey all, its about that time to replace the motor in my bronco. Currently it has a 5.0 in it. I was checking out jasper engines, and they have a rebuilt 302 for about $1800 or i could go with a 351 for $2200. I was thinking for a few more dollars to get the 351. As of now i'm towing an 18ft boat, but plan to upgrade to something bigger next summer. Should i just replace what i have, or get the bigger motor. any info would be appreciated...

If the truck is primarily for towing, gearing is more important than engine size, If you are in need of changing the engine then it wouldn't hurt to drop a 351 in as there are no mounting problems, they both use the same mounts. What gearing do you have in the differential?

Go all out and throw in the new twin turbo POWERSTROKE and you'll have no problem pulling a boat! HEHE... Gearing is a big deal in it however, the less the engine has to work to pull the trailer the more effecient it's going to be. There isn't a lot of difference between the two motors as in how they bolt up and such but from my experiance the 351 has more TQ and the 302 has a higher end HP more for high revs and stuff. I would go with a 351 with a mild towing cam and a decent intake and a free flowing exhaust so you'll deff. have the power you need. Also, if you take a vehicle that can be had with either the V6 or V8 in it most will go for the V6 for fuel economy right? Well, the V8 works less to pull the weight around and I believe that this would go for this question too. Just my $.02... Thanks for listening...

"Distributor the 302/351 distributors look the same but... The only difference between the 2 are the oil pump drive is larger on the 351

 

Computer You must get a 351 computer from a truck just like your 302. If you have a E4OD transmission you must get a 351 computer from an E4OD truck. You should be able to get this off a junkyard truck just like the intake. Just don't get one that was on a flood damaged vehicle

Exhaust Crossover The 351 is a wider engine so to connect to the exhaust manifold you'll need a wider corssover. There are a few options to acomplish this. The stock crossover's are part of the first converter, so it is an expensive part to buy new. You can get it used, or have an exhaust shop build you something custom. remember to keep O2 sensor and install it about 6-12" away from the cylinder head

& in case you get a short block:

Oil Pan The 351 has a larger crank with larger main journels. So the 302 pan won't fit onto a 351, and a 351 pan won't seal on a 302.

New Intake need upperand lower, the gasket patern is diffrent from 302/351. So you can't mix an upper and lower between the two. The 302 uses squared ports and the 351 uses oval ports. If you get an intake from a junk yard it will have the matching fuel rail.

Fuel Rail The 351 is a wider engine so to keep the injectors nice and close to the intake valves the fuel rail is wider. You can get this with the intake from the junkyard."

thanx for all the info guys, but as far as gearing goes, i'm not sure what the truck has. I'm guessing its all original, unless the "kid" who had it b4 me changed it. hope this helps
