2 Part Problem

I recently bought a 96 bronco (107K miles) that had been re-poed. To good of a deal to pass up on. ran great for about 3 months. Exhaust system has rotted off and now it ends at the cat. When I step on the gas I get either no real response from the engine or it will red line with little power making it to the drive train. I have an intermittent engine light which is related to the o2 sensor error 1151. I've gotten a XMSN fliter change recently and everything looked good. Light was on before acceleration problems arose. I usually have to use the shoulder of the road to not hamper passing traffic.

I also have noticed in the Texas heat that after I travel a good distance(10-20 miles or more) that when i shut the vehicle off my coolant starts to boil and blows the cap off the reservoir or a least fizzes out the cap. Truck does not overheat and coolant level is good. I am a helicopter mechanic so i know I can do the repairs myself but have limited troubleshooting skills on autos.

I hate for this to be one of my first posts, but any help would be appreciated for this is my daily driver.

It is not unussual for coolant to boil when you shut off a hot engine it is no longer circulating, but if it's blowing fluid out I'd begin by checking the radiator cap.

Make sure the mixture of coolant to water is ok and it could be due to the excessive revving to get up to speed. I'm expirencing the exact same problem. I attached a dynomax muffler to my cat and the muffler's aluminum coating melted off. I'm going to replace the O2 sensor tomorrow and see what happens. If I were you, I'd check the mixture of coolant, change the O2 sensor and put a muffler on for backpressure.

If the coolant spews out the cap but the engine is not overheating, the cap is a definite possibility. The no power could be a clogged cat. Keep the glycol at a level that is consistent with your weather environment, in other words there is no need for a -30 degree protection in the hot weather of Texas. Strait water would work best, but would cause the engine and water pump to rust so put in a mix that represents the weather you encounter.

redline without making it to the wheels? you mean like a slipping trans?

sure your radiator is good? maybe pressure test it see if it holds pressure or bleeds right down. im no radiator expert but i believe its possible for your trans cooler to corrupt your antifreeze. if im wrong at least ill be corrected.

Yes but it is also a poor conductor of heat. There is no need for a 50/50 mix in Texas.
