I hope i an doing this right just learned how to turn this computer on last week. hear is my deal i bought a 93 bronco for $200 at a tow auction ran fine on the way home but trans was slipping when i first start to move but shifts ok after that. then next day had hard time getting thing started. when i did ran crappy with check engine light on blowing black smoke and fouling new plugs i just put in. had a friend pull eec codes i got a lot of transmissin codes and a computer failure codes. so he cleared codes and started it again and 90% of the codes came right back including computer failure code(511 i think). so i am running around chasing my tail and sugestions on where to start?

well for 200 bucks you cant go wrong

but it sounds like there are some serious probs with the truck but you have a pretty simple solution get a junkyard tranny and a motor with a carb and do away with the efi this could be the easiest option but it might be something as simple as a knock sensor or o2 sensor or something i woudl check all that stuff first then check the compression to see if the motor is blown the seller may have put go kart oil in that would explain it running for a while

all in all i think you got a steal i would have done it you just have alot of **** to check out

i would keep the efi if its possible

thanks for sugestions i forgot to add that after spending whole day playing with it i gave up. got next morning went out to start it and it was back to normal no check engine light no black smoke. cleared codes and pulled again all came back. so really thinking computer is bad. also noticed when running bad if key is on engine not started can hear feul pump running all the time not shutting off after few seconds like it does when running good

That really sounds like a borked computer and a worn trans, Though the trans may be operating improperly due to the computer. I'd replace the comp and see what happens. If everything but the trans works fine then it's probably time to get a junkyard trans. You can test the knock sensor by hitting the intake manifold with a rubber mallet (not with sledgehammer force) the timing should ****** on it's own if the knock sensor is working right. Some automotive stores can test the O2 sensor though it's probably time to replace that anyway.

I'm not sure what would cause intermittent black smoke. You mean coming out of the exhaust right?

Trans code "E" is the E4OD. i would have it checked out before replacing or overhauling the tranny. Cost is close to $2500-$3000 for a shop to rebuild one.

thanks, i'll do that. when i got it all the transmission pan bolts were loose so tightend them but still leaking so gasket is probably shot got a new one but haven't put it on yet. some of the transmission codes i got were that shift soleniods not responding. but that might be my screwy computer. does engine computer control transmission ar is it some thing else? also if i find transmission in junk yard i know to try to get 95 or newer, do i need to change anything or is it a strait swap? mine is 93.

Should be a strait swap but also, if you're leaking fluid or low on fluid in the tranny then they do all kinds of wierd stuff. Also, what's your reasoning behind 95 or newer? Just wondering?

I'd go for the computer first before spending money on the trany. The computer controls the fuel mixture and if it thinks the truck is running lean it will enrich the mix. You might want to change the O2 sensor first, it tells the computer how rich or lean the engine is running. If it is bad, the computer will not adjust it properly.

Good luck,

:)>-

thanks guys. i am working on finding computer. pretty sure trany is bad thought fluid very dark brown and burnt looking but might be wrong. about 95 or newer trany read in tech article that they had all upgrades. is there better year to look for or does it even matter as long as its e4od? advice gratefully accepted.

I'd look for the upgraded tranny if my e40d had been re-built to 95 specs it'd probabaly still be runnin.

Yes, the 95-up E4OD had some improvements over earlier (89-94) units. And this tranny IS controlled by the computer or ECM for shifting, based on engine and speed sensor inputs. IF the fluid is dark brown and smells burnt, that's a telltale sign of internal slippage or damage to the tranny. You can try changingthe fluid and filter first. You could also just have a bad shift solenoid. An old car salesman trick was to put sawdust in the tranny. It would run enough to drive the car off thte lot, but not long after that. Haha!!! But hey, for $200, it's still heck of a deal if you can find the parts at a salvage yard. Try to get some kind of warranty, liek 30 days or 3 months on the used tranny, which should run around $600-$800 at the yards.

hehe never heard of the sawdust trick, thats also easily found during a re-build and can lead to your lot getting trashed by angry customers. a cap full of brake fluid will make it work like new for a month or so. Freind of mine did that to get him through to another paycheck so he could afford a trans rebuild.
