Hi, y'all. My great uncle bought the Bronco new, and I had always liked it. He knew of my interest in cars, and how much I liked it, so it was willed to me. At any rate, I'm a big gearhead, but know NOTHING about trucks. The car is still in Georgia, and I probably won't get it up here for a year or so - whenever we move and I get the detached garage for my toys (my first car, a 67 GTO, and an open track car, a Merkur XR4Ti, and now the Bronco).

Quick blurb about me that may explain some stuff below. I'm an engine guy. My knowledge from toys is about Ford 2.3L turbos. From work (literally an engine engineer at Ford) is the 4.6L Modular. All 3 versions - 2V, 3V, and 4V. I do my own calibration on the 2.3 stuff. I have done a lot of oddball fabrication on the XR, because there's virtually zero aftermarket for it. I'm learning bodywork on lots of things, primarily leading up to finishing the GTO.

The Bronco is well used, despite the low miles. It has a 170, and is bare bones. I don't know if they ever sold these things new without a top or doors, but I have neither. I hope to get it into shape where I can take it to some sand dunes that some friends of mine frequent. By no means ********* stuff, but something I can have fun with, and drive to work when I'm up for open top driving. Right now, the truck is downright scary because of tires (easy to remedy), and brakes.

At any rate, the hope is to put a modern drivetrain in it. I have a 4.6L 4V engine that was slated for another project (punted!) that has zero miles since a rebuild. I hope to put that in it, if I can find a transmission and transfer case from something newer that will bolt up. I've been told by a co-worker that they will fit, hopefully he's right. I can fab up the motor mounts, but my biggest fear is the intermediate shaft (between steering column and steering gear).

However, things I don't know about are what all bolts in? Specifically, the rest of the drivetrain, brakes, steering, etc? I'm hoping that there is plenty of cross compatibility with later trucks, so I could get, say, disk brakes from a junkyard truck, and convert them. What about upgrading axles? What just bolts in?

The goal is to do as much swapping without turning this into a major project as possible. Part because of cost, part because I would prefer to eventually finish restoring the GTO. The engine still probably is lower down the list, but I'd like to get some decent brakes on this ASAP.

The big question I have is this: Is there any good single source for info on interchangability? A book, a technical website that isn't just a forum? I can't stand newbies on other message boards who ask questions without doing their homework......so I want to go do my homework.

Welcome to the Zone > . Sounds like you can be a big asset here. We don't get too ******* newbees as they do in other forums. A lot of them are young guys/gals that need pointing in the right direction. As far as a book or technical site that has info on bolt in interchangability between a older truck and a 4.6L engine, I've got a feeling you will become the expert :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . I for one will be delighted to read your write up on progress and how you did it.

When you get a chance post some pictures.

Good luck,

:)>-

Welcome to the 'zone!!

Sounds like you've got a plan!!

Unfortunately, the 4.6l is a very wide engine, very, very, very wide....

It is wider than a 427 SOHC. You are going to have a brutal time trying to get this engine to fit in your truck.

That said, there are no trannies that are "bolt in " for your conversion, although if you find one from a newer Ford 4x4, you may be able to find an adaptor kit to fit it to your Dana 20.

Your fab and electrical skills will play a very big part in your ability to complete this part of your project.

To upgrade the diffs, the best I can say is find a donor 76 or 77 Bronco, that will be the only "bolt in" you will find. This will also get you p/s and disc (hopefully power too)

Research hydroboost brake systems, and Chevy disc brake conversions for your current front axle. (should be a Dana 30)

Scout and Yota p/s are good steering conversions to look at, as is a Saginaw p/s pump conversion.

I wish you the best of luck with your research, and in getting this project done, please post pics as it progresses!

First thing I think you should do is look at the VIN #. If it is a U13 and you do that, I would have to track you down and shoot ya. The U13 is an original Roadster that didn't come with top or doors. In all honesty, it really would be a crying shame if you did that much to an original Roadster because they are rare. I would be tempted to find any other EB (the only two exceptions to this are the 66 Roadster or a Stroppe) to do your mods to and restore the U13 to original.

Just my .02

Ask BullyBob about Roadsters, he is the local expert on them because I think at one time he had a couple of them, but I do know he has at least one right now.

Wow, it actually IS a roadster. U13FL750105. Sorry this took so long to get back to the board, but I've been getting ready to go to Georgia, and planned on doing some stuff to it. So, I started doing a little checking, and find out the blurb about the Roadster. Thanks to all who replied.

Here's a shot of it. I may go ahead and put some bigger wheels and tires on it, probably a 4 point and a bikini top to keep the water out. I may head up to Jeff's Bronco Graveyard this weekend, and talk to him about some things.

I've read that there are only about 50 of these things known to still exist. Is that really true? Considering that, I probably won't be looking at anything that would be a tearup (as far as cutting and welding). Sounds like I don't have enough life insurance to do that.

By the way, I still have the original title, as well. Sold as new to Kingdom Farms (my last name is King, my uncle's weekend getaway was named "Kingdom").

Yep,

That's a U13

Very clean & looks origional except it had a rag top on it at one time.

You can tell by the adaptor on the windshield, & rails on the bed-rails.

The bows may still be around. (maybe the soft-doors as well)

The seats look stock.

Great find....! Wish I had it..!!

After having seen a picture of it, I'd hesitate to do anything to it but restore it to original [-X . There is probably nothing else that would keep it's value  /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . Any changes take the risk of devaluing it :-& . Check with some car restoration experts before doing anything [-o< .

Great picture :D/

Good luck,

:)>-

I've got a little experience in that. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I've had a 67 GTO (hence the '67' in the handle) for over 17 years. It has been through various stages of restoration, and one thing I learned is that having a very nice vehicle and not doing what you want to with it is not fun. Having said that.......nothing burns me up more than someone putting a flippin' Chevy engine in a Pontiac, or pulling the 2.3 turbo out of an SVO and putting in a 302. So, I'm very sympathetic to that perspective. I don't know what I will do with it, but nothing more than making it more livable, and enjoyable. So wheels, tires, brakes, and something to keep a top on it (roll bar and bikini, full soft top, etc.) are probably it. I may end up deciding to find a better home for it, but I'm pretty emotionally attached to it.

I can tell you, I sure do wish my GTO and my old 4-4-2 (no longer with me) had been this nice when I picked them up.

The seats are, as far as I can tell, bone stock, and nearly perfect. The gauges need a little detail work. The floor pans have had some repair work done - flat plate basically screwed and glued, but I haven't looked underneath. My uncle was 80 when he died, and not exactly someone to tinker too much. I don't know what I'm looking for, but I don't believe anything (other than the stuff for the soft top that were pointed out) has been modified.

I'll try to post the rest of the pictures in the gallery if I can figure out how to.

Thanks again for all of the info.

67king.... looks like a great start for a full on resto.

I have been looking for about 15 years to find an original that clean that I can afford to buy and restore. There aren't too many "survivors" left.

It would be a shame to modify that at all...

That said, these are my opinions, and that is your truck. I do hope you enjoy it, and if history is any indication, you will soon be bitten by the Bronco "bug" and will end up with a small herd of your own!!!

There is a great place to keep your photos http://www.supermotors.net. A lot of people keep a selection of photos that follow the history of their vehicle and show pictures of how it progresses and what modifications they have done under the hood, etc. You will see a link to a lot of guys truck pictures in their signature. The user gallery is limited to the number of pictures but please also put a select few there.

Sorry for the stains on the picture :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> , but it is hard to keep the slobber in ones mouth when something like that shows up

Good luck,

:)>-
