Car and Driver magazine...

DEARBORN -- Car and Driver magazine calls the Ford F-150 one of the 5Best Trucks available on the market today. Twelve editors from Car and Driver's Michigan office spent three days driving and testing 34 eligible trucks at a secret location west of Ann Arbor. The editors drove the trucks on a wide variety of twisting and undulating back roads, on the highway and through city traffic, and then scored each vehicle on a scale of 1 to 100. When all was said, done and driven, the F-150 came out on top as the best pickup truck.

In the March, 2004 issue of the magazine, Car and Driver editors wrote: "Ford

Nice-looking truck, but I think it lacks enough power to get up a ramp on it's own. Yeah, I'm still upset they quit making Broncos, too!

it's about time that people see the fomoco trucks for what they are,the best

I bet your stock bronco couldn't keep up with it justshootme.

that truck would smoke a stock lead sled with comparable motors and drive axles we have to make it fair, whenever you think that they are making junk pull up next to a lighting and try your luck.

For one, that's not a LightNing, which is the fastest production truck made. I'm disappointed about the new F-150's performance with all of the hype that was forced on us when it came out.

And no, a Bronco won't win any races either. But it's held up better for 20 years of driving than any of the newer Ford or Chevy trucks made in the last few years.

Plus, I thought this was a BRONCO site???

I will not buy a new Ford F-150. [-X

Lighting isnt the fastest any more. the dodge ram SRT-10 with the viper V-10 has got that title. its also got a manual tranny. something the lighting doesn't

I was hoping to encite more discussion with my comments. I belive in what I stated, so no retraction, but would like to hear what new owners have to say. I read about the terrible problems folks are having with the 04 F-150 on other boards and that alone would scare me away from buying one. I've seen the T.V. shows about the extensive testing done for the suspension, noise tuning for the intake, etc. A $30K truck should not have vibration problems or sit in the shop for 2 weeks due to a bad computer. Any new vehicle can have problems, but when the company reps and engineers say "it's normal and we won't fix anything" , that is total B.S.!!!Competition is very fierce with the Nissan Titan and the Dodge trucks. Where's Chevy? Maybe the piston slap problem scared some folks off, but even the new ones are not as good as the mid-90's models.

Personally, I like the look of the new F-150...it is far better than the girlie-fied style of the previous (now Heritage) model. I also have to respect Ford for making such a huge financial investment in their factories to allow for the tremendous variety in styles/options that are now available for the F-150.

I poke fun at the previous style F-150, but I have several friends who own one or more, and by and large, they have been very, very solid workhorses. Even with better than 100,000 miles on one friends', he has had to change the oil and the tires on it, and that is about it - and he is not one to baby a vehicle.

If I am inclined to purchase a pickup truck when I get home I would undoubtably buy a '97 to '03 F-150. Particularly with the hew body style now being available, prices on the previous style will inevitably go down a bit, yet you are still gonna get a tuff truck that will have years of service still left in it. You may not get all the wizz-bang new-fangeled features that the new truck has, but hey, I don't need 'em...that's why I already drive a Bronco.

All in all I like the new F-150...I just refuse to cough up the $30+ thousand dollars to get a style that I would like...especially when Ford's operating profit is around 8,000 of those dollars. Personally, I'll save the cash and drive last year's technology.

Remember that I currently own a 98 Z-71, after having two prior to that. Best pickup truck model I have ever owned, bar none. The 99-02 model's engines changed considerably, and I hate them! Start the motor and you hear a terrible knock, then it goes away. It's like a bad lifter or tappet that knocks at startup but is always there with the motor running. GM terms it "piston slap", which is basically too much tolerance in the rings or poor metal in the pistons. As the engine warms up, the pistons and rings expand due to heat, and the knock goes away. This is "normal" according to the engineers and will not be repaired under warranty until the engine is destroyed. By then the warranty is expired. This was a common problem even on the new motors, and drove many people to look at Ford or Dodge. Granted that many of these motors are still on the road after 200,000 miles like the previous models. But what value do you have in a truck that sounds like it needs a new motor every time you start it up??? Same thing with the new Ford F-150. What value do you have in a truck that has the shakes and the computer goes into "limp home " mode without warning, and you've only had it for a month? I can see that a few trucks will have problems when millions are produced, but come on!!! And when you are unlucky enough to have a problem, and the dealership says "it's not covered under warranty" or "Oh, that's normal for it to happen", it keeps me from forking over the cash or signing a contract for 7 years!!!!

Right, the new Dodge SRT is now the fastest truck.

Ford stopped making Broncos in 1996, so I guess we can allow the F-150 crowd (sarcasm). It's the same beast in many respects.

I will add to my quote "I will not buy a new F-150", and "I will not buy a new Chevy. Looking hard at the DOdge Hemi or SRT, but not buying them either."

While your choice of words may ruffle my feathers (do you kiss your mother with that mouth?) I get your point. I have been a Ford fan since childhood, and still own 2 of them. I also own 2 Chevies. No brand loyalty or patriotism involved, since they both have been outsourced to foreign countries for parts and assembly for many years. I just demand a higher standard of quality in a new truck that costs as much as a house. It's supposed to be better technology from 20 years ago.

:)) FIRST YOU SAY YOU HAVE BEEN A FORD FAN SINCE YOU WERE A CHILD,THEN YOU FOLLOW UP SAYING YOU HAVE NO BRAND LOYALTY,YOU SPEAK WITH FORKED TOUNG....AND CORRECT ME IF i AM WRONG,BUT i KNOW OF NO FORD ASSEMBLED OUTSIDE THE US,AND IF YOU COMPAIR PRICES WITH THE OTHER TRUCKS,YOU WILL FIND THAT THE OTHERS ARE MORE COSTLY THAN FORD !

ABOUT A HOUSE AND A HALF ! PRUNE A FEW OF YOUR FEATHERS AND DON T MAKE STATEMENTS YOU CAN T BACK UP WITH FACT. DID YOU GET THAT FORKED TOUNG FROM YOUR MOTHER,MINE HAS BEEN DEAD FOR 8 YEARS NOW,I WISH SHE WERE HERE TO KISS,AT LEAST IT WOULD BE AN HONEST ONE. BJ

Peace, dude! I am a Ford fan, and a Chevy fan, too. THe new trucks may be assembled in the U.S.A., but some of the parts are not made here.

Let's agree to refrain from personal comments, foul language and such. Seems I am to blame for enciting too much enthusiasm from you. But let's lay the facts on the table about the new truck. In that regard, I back up what I say.

you re right.my apologies to you and all, yes there are problems with the new truck, from what i know thy are no more or less than any new vehical, I own a dodge truck,an olds 88 delta ,the wife drives a merc.tracer wagon, the boy a ford tarus, they are all solid good running, and i care for all of them, but my heart belongs to my bronco, its an 89 fs eb classic,in 95% showroom cond. only 47k on it,ibought it over 4 years ago,and it sat for over 6 years and i m still fixing things because of the 6 years downtime before I got it..will try to get up a pic when wife can show me how to do it on our systym. later.
