Can anyone tell me where this bushing goes on the spare tire carrier? It is approximately 2" long with inside diameter of about 1 1/4".IMG_8322.jpeg

It looks like the one on my 96 that just broke into pieces. It goes on the horizontal bar to the attachment piece of center of tire carrier, that when you close the tire to attachment of body of rear Bronco, it acts like a shock absorber when closed. It is right where the metal attachment on rear of Bronco, and the center piece of tire carrier mesh together. I hope this is not to confusing. I don't know if you have to slice it to go over the rod or not when replacing.

Could you post a pic showing exactly where you positioned the bushing on your spare tire carrier?

Pictures are beyond my pc -- It is just to the side of the catch of carrier going into the rear of Bronco to latch. You can Google a schematic of 96 spare tire carrier, and you will see.

Thanks. I think that's where I had it--on the top, horizontal bar--but it seemed to prevent the latching mechanism from engaging.

You could try wrapping the area with black electrical type tape, and trying to close the carrier after every couple layers. Its possible that something is slightly bent or adjusted out of position, and the bushing is touching down someplace it should not be-or is simply too thick in one spot for your current setup. By sneaking up on the thickness of the bushing until the latch will NOT catch it could show you where any tight places are.

My original bushing has crumbled since 96, and I purchased a new one that is in a complete circle, and I just wonder if the only way to go in is to split the energy bushing?

Probably where the swing arm attaches to the striker on the tailgate (not the striker itself, the wide “guide” area that helps keep it in place as its latched)

I got mine from Energy Suspensions. It comes with it split but fit a little loose. I used some inner tube to wrap the bar first then put it on and zip tied it. Works great.

Can you post a photo showing exactly where you installed this bushing?

I just got a message from Energ Susp, and they said it was split. My bad, as it looks like it has not split in it; however, I will have to relook in morning. It makes sense to be split, I just did not see the split as it is so tight. The idea of using tape to go around the rod was a good one if no bushing was available. Eyes getting old is only excuse.

We bought our 91 XLT Bronco about 9 months ago. I think we did OK it is straight, good paint and no rust. The front rims don't match the rear ones.
The picture of the bushing for spare tire you can see from the pic.
I'm new at this of posting I would like to start a new subject have not figured out how to do it.

Thanks for responding and congratulations on your new-to-you Bronco! I'll slide the bushing over on mine, but not really clear what good it does there!

Tried placing the bushing in the same spot, but it seems to restrict the carrier from latching. I've just about decided it's not necessary!

It is to stop any raddling. There is a rubber stop on the latch that needs to be adjusted, too far out it will not latch, too far in you can get raddling.

My Energy bushing did not have the split, and I cut the split in bushing, and installed on the rod with the small *** that holds the bushing in position, and it works like a charm. I think the split was just enough play for the latching to be perfect. Yep, it acts like a buffer when closing the latch.
I just had a new AC compressor installed, with a new dryer, and filter in the line. Thank the Lord for AC in this weather. The upgrades in the #2 wiring, and 4:10 gears, with 10/50/31 tires, with new Ford relay, makes my 96, 5.8 motor seem like a new vehicle. I get better gas mileage with Amsoil oil 5/30 synthetic in motor, and differential 75/110, with poly bushings, and Rancho 9000 shocks. The 74,000 miles just turned over, and hope for several more years.
