is there a way to identify which drivetrain components are in my 1986 by using the " vin " number???

No, but you can find out how it was originally geared from the safety sticker on the driver B post. It will list the axle code and from there you can find out what gears it was shipped with. However, if someone changed them that won't help. Another way is to look for a metal tag on one of the differential case bolts. It will give a code indicating what the gears are.

a third way is to jack the rear end up and turn the wheel one full revolution and count the number of times the drive shaft revolves, ie. 3 and a half turns of the drive shaft would be 3.54 gears. If you have a C6 transmission the indicator on the dash will be PNRD21 , If you have an AOD transmission it will be PNRDD1 the first D will have a circle around it.. If it is a stick shift, I don't remember what transmission was on the 86. Now we come to the transfer case, that is hard to describe, but it will be a NP208 (it has a fairly smooth case when looking at it from behind) or a Borg-Warner 1345 (which has a bunch of ribs along the surface when looked at from behind).

Good luck,

If you want confirmation about the components, take some pictures and post them including the safety sticker. Size then no bigger than 1024 x 768

yo,

As Seabronc advised; many owner/shops may have swapped components since new.

I made a mistake many years ago by telling someone to use the Driver's side label to ID their Rear Differential (axle, pumpkin type, etc.); turned out that a previous owner had swapped a Dana 60 in place of the stock 8.8

so... a run down;

DIFFERENTIAL:

8.8 Cover Gasket Depiction

Information, History, ID, pics, etc.; "...8.8” rear’s have a ten bolt inspection plate on the back that’s about 10” from the center of the top bolt to the bottom bolt center. The 8.8” first saw service in the 79 Crown Vic. and in 1980 for the F100/150..."

But the Dana 60 does not have provions for the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) NOR the internal tone ring. So no ability to provide a 72,900 to 86,900 pulses per mile signal via the 4WABS module to the Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module (PSOM); PSOM converts this signal to 8,000 pulses per mile. That signal is sent out to the PCM and then to:

E4OD, if equipped;

speed control amplifier, if equipped;

and overhead consoles compass/outside temperature display module, if equipped;

The front axle identification tag is a bar code label on the rear facing surface of the axle support arm, passenger side on Bronco, F-150 and F-250 4x4. For F-350, the label is located on the axle tube.

Rear axles (8.8 have a metal tag secured under adjacent axle housing cover bolt heads listing Ford and Dana part numbers and the ratio. Front drive axles have a similar tag.

Ford Axle Identification Tag

The plant code on the axle identification tag is to be used as the official service identifier.

The plant code for an axle denotes a particular design and specific ratio, and if it is a conventional or limited slip type. In addition, the plant code will not change as long as that particular axle assembly never undergoes an external design change. If, however, an internal design change takes place during the production life of the axle and that internal change affects service parts interchangeability, a dash and numerical suffix will be added to the plant code.

http://www.diesel-dave.com/vehic/manual/stj/images/e6470e.gif

Note that plant codes in the illustrations are identical, but the tag below shows a numeric. This means that as an assembly both axles are interchangeable; however, internally they are different. Therefore, each would require different internal service parts at service time.

Axle Codes, Bronco, Rear from 85 & 90 Owner's Manuals; here's the combined codes from 85 and 90 Bronco owner's manuals; this should cover most if not all codes out there: REGULAR: (Regular means "open" diff in this context) 13 4.11 14 3.00 16 3.50 18 3.08 19 3.55 LIMITED SLIP: H3 4.11 H4 3.00 H5 4.10 H6 3.50 H8 3.08 H9 3.55 If you have 3 digits on your axle code the first two digits are the rear axle code. Thus, looking at my pics above and cross-referencing the chart above my '90 came from the factory w/3.55's and Ford's sorry excuse for a limited slip differential, the Crap-Lok, er I mean Trak-Lok. Now, to know if the front diff is open or limited slip I'm ass-uming you have to look for a tag on the diff, as there is no "front axle code" on the door jamb sticker..." Miesk5 Note, I'll add that the axle code for some years (Maybe all) adds a 2 after the limited slip code if the front is also limited slip. So the code "H9" is a 3.55:1 limited slip rear axle only. "H92" would be a 3.55:1 limited slip on both axles. by ElKabong (Ken, El Kabong)

Ring & Pinion Calculator by counting teeth Source: by http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Ring_Pinion_Calculator.html

..

Gear Ratio Determination; "...remove the differential cover or the 3rd member and count the number of teeth on the gears. Unfortunately, this can get messy. One somewhat easy yet very reliable way is to jack up the wheels, disconnect the driveshaft, rotate one wheel, and count how many revolutions the pinion yoke/****** makes. If you turn one tire & the other one either stays still while the pinion rotates, or the other one rotates backward while the pinion stays still, or something in between, then you've got an open diff or a very weak LSD (like a Trac-Lok with too many miles on it). In this case, you need to secure one wheel (perhaps by lowering the tire onto the ground), then you can figure your gear ratio by rotating the airborne tire TWO full rotations and counting the number of times the pinion rotates. 3.73 turns means 3.73 gears. If you only rotate the tire once, then 1.865 turns means 3.73 gears. If you turn one tire & the other one turns the same number of turns in the same direction, then you've got a good LSD or locker. In this case, you can just rotate the tires ONE full rotation and figure your gear ratio by counting the number of times your pinion rotates. 3.73 turns means 3.73 gears..." Read More

C6 have 17 pan bolts, see diagram & pic; P-R-N-D-2-1, shifter pattern - Indicator pic by miesk5 @ http://www.broncolinks.com/gallery_images/C6ShiftIndicatorpic.JPG

You can measure the transmission fluid pan to determine which transmission you have if identification information is not available. A 4R70W transmission pan has an overall length of just under 15 inches, while an E4OD pan is much larger, measuring about 20 inches in overall length.-

But a visual depiction is better!

ENGINE

5.0 vs. 5.8 (EFI) Identification

They use different exhaust tubes to connect the EGR to the exhaust. The 5.0L gets exhaust from the lower intake, while the 5.8L gets exhaust from the passanger exhaust manifold. The positive ID is to measure the lower intake; 302 is aprox ~ 8 inches wide. 351 is aporx ~ 11 inches wide. The 5.0L uses squared ports and the 5.8L uses oval ports. If you get an intake from a junk yard it will have the matching fuel rail..."

Source: by Adrianspeeder (The OJ Special, The Lariat, The Bronco) from this Plate; you could assume you have a rear diff code of 19 installed in his Bronco;

Basing on this;

Bronco, Rear from 85 & 90 Owner's Manuals; "Note, I'll add that the axle code for some years (Maybe all ) adds a 2 after the limited slip code if the front is also limited slip. So the code "H9" is a 3.55:1 limited slip rear axle only. "H92" would be a 3.55:1 limited slip on both axles. by ElKabong http://web.archive.o...m/axlecode.html

CODE 19 = 3.55 ratio
