OKay fellas. Another new year has come and though I am very late writing my report here it is none the less. So every year my wife and I and a bunch of our friends go camping in the snow for new years. Its our way of celebrating. The off roading was good nothing special to report. The bronco ran fine other than a power steering pump that is starting to squeek. Wheeled all day new years eve then we were headed back to camp when we saw this. Man what a bad day for this guy. So of course being the responsible people we are we stop. REally got no choice though as the entire road was blocked. Oh and very icey. Well according to this guy he was driving his 2WD chevy. Note there are two problems with that. Pulling his travel trailer on the ice road with NO chains, when he starting sliding backward. He and his wife hit the ejection handles and bailed out and he watched his little truck and trailer slide away from him. Off course it jack knifed and went for the edge. By some stroke of luck or by God's will the trailer found the one huge cut tree stump and parked right on top of it. I could not have backed it up on the street with any more precision. So the guy by no action of his own, did not lose his truck and trailer over the side of the road, which believe me was steep enough that if it had gone over it might not come back up for a very long time. So a tribunal was gathered at the site of all the decent people that stopped to help. Some experienced some not too much. But all willing to help. Now a little bit of situation. Truck and trailer were jack knifed, and the tongue of the trailer while still on the ball, was up under the bumper of the truck lifting the rear tire just off the ground. We Had no idea what would happen when the two parted ways so we took our time. We knew there was some tension built up and waiting to release. Good thing we rolled up when we did. The guy was trying to loosen the receiver without knowing what was going to happen. So the tribunal discussed the fate of truck and trailer......with the ultimate decision resting with the one who screwed himself...... Tow straps and chains were gathered. The trailer was tied off to several trees to keep it from falling Over the cliff. A well equipped jeep, and by well equipped I mean he had a winch and no one else did, came on the up hill side of the scene and we set in to work. Tied the rear frame of the jeep to a huge tree and ran the winch line to the front of the truck. Even trying to pull the truck a little nothing would budge because of the trailer being under the truck. HI LIFT to the rescue. My buddy who is sometimes of questionable intelligence grabs my hi lift and goes down and uses it to pry the trailer away from the truck. With the winch pulling, the stuck truck spinning tires, which now have chains thanks again to my group, and the HI lift prying the two apart, they finally separate. The show was over and most people left. The general consensus was that everyone wanted to see the trailer fall. Nothing near that exciting. So after everyone cleared out and my friends chains on the 2wd we began the very long and slow drive out of the trails and on to paved road so the guy could go to a hotel for the night. We escorted him on the 45 min drive out to make sure he did not get stuck again. The guy was very thankful and polite which made us feel good for helping. Just goes to show what a great community we belong to when we off road. If you were stuck on the side of the freeway in CA no one would stop to help. But up there 45 miles away its a different world and different mindset. Well sorry the story was so long but it was a solid 2 hours of work to get this guy out. Sorry no pics of the bronco on this one my wife was running the camera..... Have a great year.
