All this is my first time here...looks like a great forum with a whole lot of expereince....hope you can help me...

My 76 will not shift into reverse and is tough going into 1st. 2nd and 3rd works ok. My shift handle (on the column) has a lot of play. However, I cannot manual shift into reverse...I would think that this would not be the case if the problem was in the shifter. My xmsn was replaced about 10K miles ago... the linkage was disconnected then but has worked fine...until now.

Any thoughts are appreciated...Thanks,

Rob

It sure sounds like a linkage problem. Have you checked the linkage out? Have you tried moving the links at the transmission by hand to determine if it is the transmission or linkage? GEt under the truck and have someone go thru the gears, truck not started of course, and watch the linkage at the transmission.

Good luck,

Seabronc,

Thanks. From the bottom of the bronco I can move the links by hand without any trouble... when I move it to reverse it does not snap into place. I noticed that it is leaking from the same point where the linkage connects. what do you think about the possiblity of a rubber bushing binding where the linkage connects to the xmsn. Could it hurt anything to pull the linkage out of the xmsn and see what the status is of the bushing or seal?

Thanks again,

Rob

First, I would remove the "rod" off of the clamped on bracket.

Then, rock the veh. while shifting (by hand) with that bracket, into reverse.

Also, the other bracket has to be centered (i.e. not in 2nd or 3rd gear) or it won't go into reverse. (or 1st)

Actually removing "both rods" is best so you can "feel" it pop into/out of the indents.

Point being, the sloppy shift stuff may be binding everything up.

If this doesn't tell the story, then look into the shift shafts. The leaking at these points is kinda common after time. :-B
