what kind of oil to use

Why do you think it burns oil? Also, are you using synthetic now or not? Is your oil PSI dropping?

All engines burn a little bit of oil, its unavoidable. The more miles the engine has, the more oil it will burn. I wouldn't worry about it unless your truck blows a thick cloud of white smoke. That usually means that your oil rings are bad.

I use 10w-30 in my 5.8 Bronco, (which has almost 170,000). 10w-40 would work well too. The Bronco manual reccommends 5w-30, but I feel that it is just too light of an oil to run in a truck that has over 150,000miles. I did use Pennzoil until I found a bunch of old posts on this website that are against it. Now I use Castrol (is that spelled right?). From what I understand, Pennzoil leaves a thick coat of sludge on the inside of the engine. But my dad uses it in everything from tractors, our combine, and all our vehicles. While we're on the subject, why exactly are so many people against Pennzoil?(is there another reason other than the sludge thing?) All the trucks and cars my dad has ever owned have gone way past the 200,000 mile mark and never had to rebuild an engine. I'm just trying to satisfy my curiosity, I already switched oil brands.

I'm a castrol fan mainly just because. I've never like penzoil since auto in high school. Not to mention if you put it in without having your rings set already you'll never seat them properly. Just more personnal on my side though? Not to mention John Force uses it... (not that I would know anything about funny car or top fuel)

I use the Castrol HD-30wt (S.A.E. -30) in my older engines on the Broncos. Depends on where you live, too, since it doesn't get very cold here in South Texas. I wouldn't use a synthetic in an old motor simply because it costs more than regular oil, and you'll be adding a quart more often. As a guideline, I consider one quart per 1000 miles normal usage on a high-mileage motor. Back in the old days, Pennz-Oil and some other brands had some detergents in the oil that would sludge up the motor really bad within 100K miles. I saw an old 351C motor in a Mustang two weeks ago with at least an inch of sludge in the lifter valley under the intake. I've never had a problem with the Castrol oil, have used it since the late-70's. JSM84
