u joints

does anybody know if the u joint at the pinion ****** is bigger than the u joints at the double cardan carrier. my local parts store has two part # s and they are different size. they said the ones that connect to the pinion ****** are bigger.

Yes, the rear U is larger. The fronts have to fit into the cardan housing and are smaller but since there's two of them to share the load it's still a strong joint.

Just had another thought on this one. I had forgotten that the 78's use the smaller 1310 U-joint in the rear yoke & the 79's use the larger 1330. Don't ask me why, Ford does what it does & it's not like they ask for opinions first. But they used different size U's between 78 & 79 and maybe THAT'S what the guy at the counter is seeing. Prob doesn't matter now a month after you asked but I figured I'd throw it in there.
