Transmission Leaking

Hello All I am looking for some help. I have a 78 bronco, about 3 weeks ago I dropped out the transmission because I had trans fluid leaking out of the inspection plate area on the front of the trans. I changed the front pump seal and all has been good until today. I started it up today and moved the bronco the garage to do some minor work and looked under it and noticed a trans fluid puddle. It only Leaked for about 10 mins but left about a 6 inch puddle, and was coming from the inspection plate cover area again. Does anyone know what else could be the problem for the leaking?? I let it set for about an hour after it stopped leaking and started it up, shifted thru the gears, moved it back and forth but i cant get it to leak now. These are the same problems i had before I dropped the transmission. I would appriciate any help anyone has.

have you checked the speedometer connector, filler tube, or trans oil lines?

I ran new trans oil lines after I put the tranmission back in it a few weeks ago, and they dont appear to be leaking. I put a little bit of Black RTV around the speedometer connector and filler tube when I put that back together, and dont see any oil around them.

When it leaks it is coming out of the inspection plate area on the front of the trans. I am wondering if maybe the trans is building up pressure if it sets for several days, and when you start it starts pushing out fluid?

The trans does not leak just sitting there, and actually I have driven it 3-4 times this last week and it has not leaked, but last Sat. about 7 days ago I started it up after sitting for a week and it leaked about a 6 inch puddle in about 10 minutes then stopped leaking, and hasn't leaked since.

I appricitate any suggestions, I am baffled!

this may sound a little crazy but when you said that it sat for several days then leaked, have you thought that maybe too much fluid was added and it leaked out and now it has the correct amount?

I have thought of that. Maybe that is the case, but it didn't leak for 2 weeks or so after I dropped the trans and changed the front pump seal. These are the same symptoms it had before I dropped the trans.

I bought the bronco about 6 months ago, and it didnt start leaking until this past April.

I really appriciate any suggustions you give me.

how old is t-convertor? could be a problem there.

torque convertor is stock as far as i know. are you thinking a hairline crack? could it be a slow leak in the t-convertor drain plug, and it only leaks when you happen to stop with the drain plug down??

when you take the inspection plate off the torque convertor seems to be dry and clean.

I didn't notice anything with the convertor, it looked clean and dry. It looked like there was a little bit of dried trans fluid that had leaked from around the front pump seal which is what I thought the problem was, but when it leaked again I was baffled.

The weird thing is I have not been able to get the tran to leak since my first post (2 weeks ago).

The only other thing I can think of is if the bushing that the front pump seal sits into, is slightly warped and allows trans fluid to leak around the seal until things get warmed up enough for the seal to expand and fill in any small voids in the bushing.

I am taking it out of town this weekend to do some wheelin, I hope it dosen't leak, but I am going to take tranny fluid with me so if it starts leaking and gets low I can add enough fluid to get me back.

I overfilled the tranny on my '79 after replacing the filter and installing a drain plug and it purged the excess fluid all over my garage floor until it was at the proper level and then stopped leaking. Sounds like a similar situation to yours(?)
